TL;DR: BigBrain is a free, publicly available tool that provides considerable neuroanatomical insight into the human brain, thereby allowing the extraction of microscopic data for modeling and simulation, and enables testing of hypotheses on optimal path lengths between interconnected cortical regions or on spatial organization of genetic patterning.

Abstract: Reference brains are indispensable tools in human brain mapping, enabling integration of multimodal data into an anatomically realistic standard space. Available reference brains, however, are restricted to the macroscopic scale and do not provide information on the functionally important microscopic dimension. We created an ultrahigh-resolution three-dimensional (3D) model of a human brain at nearly cellular resolution of 20 micrometers, based on the reconstruction of 7404 histological sections. “BigBrain” is a free, publicly available tool that provides considerable neuroanatomical insight into the human brain, thereby allowing the extraction of microscopic data for modeling and simulation. BigBrain enables testing of hypotheses on optimal path lengths between interconnected cortical regions or on spatial organization of genetic patterning, redefining the traditional neuroanatomy maps such as those of Brodmann and von Economo.

The Role of NO/sGC/cGMP/PKG Signaling Pathway in Regulation of Platelet Function
TL;DR: In this article , a review focused on inconsistent and controversial data of NO/sGC/cGMP/protein kinase G signaling in platelets including sources of NO that activate sGC in platelet, the role of sGC/PKG in inhibition/activation, and the complexity of the regulation of platelet inhibitory mechanisms by cGMP-PKG pathways.

Control Distance and Energy Scaling of Complex Networks
TL;DR: This work provides an upper bound of the control energy as a function of path length between driver node and target node along an infinite path graph for a single target node and refines the upper bound, by an order of magnitude or more, taking into account not only the length of the path, but also the redundancy of paths.
Assortative mixing in micro-architecturally annotated brain connectomes

TL;DR: This work formally study assortative mixing in annotated connectomes by quantifying the tendency for regions to be connected with each other based on the similarity of their micro-architectural attributes, and finds that the arrangement of connectivity patterns with respect to biological annotations shape patterns of regional functional specialization.
Convolutional neural networks for cytoarchitectonic brain mapping at large scale.
Christian Schiffer,Hannah Spitzer,Kai Kiwitz,Nina Unger,Konrad Wagstyl,Alan C. Evans,Stefan Harmeling,Katrin Amunts,Katrin Amunts,Timo Dickscheid +9 more
TL;DR: A new workflow for mapping cytoarchitectonic areas in large series of cell-body stained histological sections of human postmortem brains is presented, based on a Deep Convolutional Neural Network, which is trained on a pair of section images with annotations, with a large number of un-annotated sections in between.

A tension-based theory of morphogenesis and compact wiring in the central nervous system.
TL;DR: Many structural features of the mammalian central nervous system can be explained by a morphogenetic mechanism that involves mechanical tension along axons, dendrites and glial processes.

Mapping human cortical areas in vivo based on myelin content as revealed by T1- and T2-weighted MRI
TL;DR: The overall pattern in the myelin maps also has important correlations with the developmental onset of subcortical white matter myelination, evolutionary cortical areal expansion in human compared with macaques, postnatal cortical expansion in humans, and maps of neuronal density in non-human primates.

Human primary auditory cortex: cytoarchitectonic subdivisions and mapping into a spatial reference system.
TL;DR: In future, the transfer of in vivo structural and functional data into the same spatial reference system will enable accurate comparisons of cytoarchitectonic maps of the primary auditory cortex with activation centers as established with functional imaging procedures.

V3D enables real-time 3D visualization and quantitative analysis of large-scale biological image data sets
TL;DR: V3D-Neuron can precisely digitize the morphology of a single neuron in a fruitfly brain in minutes, with about a 17-fold improvement in reliability and tenfold savings in time compared with other neuron reconstruction tools.
