Abstract: We develop a semiclassical theory for the dynamics of electrons in a magnetic Bloch band, where the Berry phase plays an important role. This theory, together with the Boltzmann equation, provides a framework for studying transport problems in high magnetic fields. We also derive an Onsager-like formula for the quantization of cyclotron orbits, and we find a connection between the number of orbits and Hall conductivity. This connection is employed to explain the clustering structure of the Hofstadter spectrum. The advantage of this theory is its generality and conceptual simplicity.

Quantal phase factors accompanying adiabatic changes
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the Aharonov-Bohm effect can be interpreted as a geometrical phase factor and a general formula for γ(C) was derived in terms of the spectrum and eigen states of the Hamiltonian over a surface spanning C.

Energy levels and wave functions of Bloch electrons in rational and irrational magnetic fields
TL;DR: In this paper, an effective single-band Hamiltonian representing a crystal electron in a uniform magnetic field is constructed from the tight-binding form of a Bloch band by replacing the operator of the Schr\"odinger equation with a matrix method, and the graph of the spectrum over a wide range of "rational" fields is plotted.

Quantization of particle transport
TL;DR: In this paper, the integrated particle current produced by a slow periodic variation of the potential of a Schrodinger equation is evaluated, and it is shown that in a finite torus the integral of the current over a period can vary continuously, but in an infinite periodic system with full bands it must have an integer value.
