Abstract: Metabolism consists of diverse life-sustaining chemical reactions in living organisms. Autophagy is a highly conservative process that responds to various internal and external stresses. Both processes utilize surrounding resources to provide energy and nutrients for the cell. Autophagy progression may proceed to the degradative or secretory pathway determined by Rab family proteins. The former is a degradative and lysosome-dependent catabolic process that produces energy and provides nutrients for the synthesis of essential proteins. The degradative pathway also balances the energy source of the cell and regulates tissue homeostasis. The latter is a newly discovered pathway in which the autophagosome is fused with the plasma membrane. Secretory autophagy participates in diverse functions and diseases ranging from the spread of viral particles to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Aberrant metabolism in the body causes various metabolic syndromes. This review explores the relationships among autophagy, metabolism, and related diseases.

Autophagy protects ovarian cancer-associated fibroblasts against oxidative stress
TL;DR: RNA-Seq and gene set enrichment anylysis revealed that ovarian cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are mitotically active compared with normal fibro Blasts (NFs), implicating that autophagy might possess clinical utility as an attractive target for ovarian cancer treatment in the future.
Sestrin as a feedback inhibitor of TOR that prevents age-related pathologies
Jun Hee Lee,Andrei V. Budanov,Eek Joong Park,Ryan T. Birse,Teddy E. Kim,Guy Perkins,Karen Ocorr,Mark H. Ellisman,Rolf Bodmer,Ethan Bier,Michael Karin +10 more
TL;DR: Drosophila sestrin dSesn appears to be a negative feedback regulator of TOR that integrates metabolic and stress inputs and prevents pathologies caused by chronic TOR activation that may result from diminished autophagic clearance of damaged mitochondria, protein aggregates, or lipids.
Amino acid inhibition of the autophagic/lysosomal pathway of protein degradation in isolated rat hepatocytes
TL;DR: Protein degradation in isolated rat hepatocytes, as measured by the release of [14C]valine from pre-labelled protein, is partly inhibited by a physiologically balanced mixture of amino acids, indicating that the amino acids act exclusively upon the lysosomal pathway of protein degradation.
