Abstract: Atmospheric concentrations of gaseous HONO and the NO3 radical were measured simultaneously for the first time using long path differential optical absorption spectroscopy. Diurnal profiles are reported for two successive nights following days of moderate pollution at Riverside, California, together with concurrent measurements of NO2, O3 and NO concentrations and an upper limit for HCHO levels. These measurements permit an examination of selected aspects of the nighttime atmospheric chemistry of HONO and the NO3 radical and related species. Our data do not support a recently proposed homogeneous gas phase mechanism for HONO formation initiated by the reaction of the NO3 radical with HCHO.

TL;DR: In this article, the gas phase reactions of the NO3 radical, a ubiquitous constituent of nighttime atmospheres with the reduced sulfur compounds COS, CS2, CH3SH, C2H5SH, and CH3SSCH3 were investigated using a relative rate technique and long path length Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectroscopy.

A study of the interaction of NO2 with carbon particles
TL;DR: In this paper, the interaction of NO2 with carbon particles led to three products: NO gas, and NO2 − and NO3 −, removed from the particles by water extraction.

Rate coefficients for the reaction of OH with HONO between 298 and 373 K
James B. Burkholder,James B. Burkholder,Abdelwahid Mellouki,Ranajit K. Talukdar,A. R. Ravishankara +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the rate coefficients for the reaction OH + HONO H2O + NO2 were measured over the temperature range 298 to 373 K. The measured rate coefficient exhibits a slight negative temperature dependence, with k1 = (2.8 ± 1.3) × 10−12 exp((260 ± 140)/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1.

TL;DR: In this paper, the rate constants for the secondary reactions were derived from the growth and decay of the primary product NO3 and the secondary product FO under various ratios of the initial concentrations of the reactants.

Evolution of Nitrogen Oxide Chemistry in the Nocturnal Boundary Layer
TL;DR: In this paper, the nocturnal cycle of nitrogen oxides in the atmospheric boundary layer is studied by means of a onedimensional model, which solves the conservation equations of momentum, entropy, total water content, and of five chemical species.

Measurement of nitrate radical concentrations in continental air
TL;DR: Experimental field data support the earlier hypothesis that this loss process of NO/ sub 3/ may constitute both a major sink for atmospheric NO/sub x/ and a significant formation route for nitric acid, a key component of acid rain and fog.
