Abstract: Atmospheric concentrations of gaseous HONO and the NO3 radical were measured simultaneously for the first time using long path differential optical absorption spectroscopy. Diurnal profiles are reported for two successive nights following days of moderate pollution at Riverside, California, together with concurrent measurements of NO2, O3 and NO concentrations and an upper limit for HCHO levels. These measurements permit an examination of selected aspects of the nighttime atmospheric chemistry of HONO and the NO3 radical and related species. Our data do not support a recently proposed homogeneous gas phase mechanism for HONO formation initiated by the reaction of the NO3 radical with HCHO.

Equilibrium of particle nitrite with gas phase HONO: Tropospheric measurements in the high Arctic during polar sunrise
TL;DR: Gas phase HONO(g) and nitrite in particles of <5-μm size were measured in the troposphere during the Polar Sunrise Experiment at Alert, Northwest Territories, Canada, during January 19 to April 20, 1992, using denuder-filter pack sampling and IC-UV detection.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOS) to detect the presence of NO3 in the photostationary state (PSS) between O3 and NOx.
Wet annular denuder measurements of nitrous acid: laboratory study of the artefact reaction of NO2 with S(IV) in aqueous solution and comparison with field measurements
TL;DR: In this article, the aqueous phase formation of nitrous acid from dissolved NO2 and SO2 at wetted denuder walls was studied. But the results of the experiments were not used to quantify an artefact.

Measurement of nitrate radical concentrations in continental air
TL;DR: Experimental field data support the earlier hypothesis that this loss process of NO/ sub 3/ may constitute both a major sink for atmospheric NO/sub x/ and a significant formation route for nitric acid, a key component of acid rain and fog.
