Abstract: Background Bacterial vaginosis is believed to be a risk factor for preterm delivery. We undertook a study of the association between bacterial vaginosis and the preterm delivery of infants with low birth weight after accounting for other known risk factors. Methods In this cohort study, we enrolled 10,397 pregnant women from seven medical centers who had no known medical risk factors for preterm delivery. At 23 to 26 weeks' gestation, bacterial vaginosis was determined to be present or absent on the basis of the vaginal pH and the results of Gram's staining. The principal outcome variable was the delivery at less than 37 weeks' gestation of an infant with a birth weight below 2500 g. Results Bacterial vaginosis was detected in 16 percent of the 10,397 women. The women with bacterial vaginosis were more likely to be unmarried, to be black, to have low incomes, and to have previously delivered low-birth-weight infants. In a multivariate analysis, the presence of bacterial vaginosis was related to preterm de...

Maternal Vitamin D Deficiency Is Associated with Bacterial Vaginosis in the First Trimester

TL;DR: There was a dose-response association between 25(OH)D and the prevalence of BV, and vitamin D deficiency is associated with BV and may contribute to the strong racial disparity in the prevalence.

TL;DR: It is hypothesised that Gardnerella spp initiate BV biofilm formation, but incident BV (iBV) requires incorporation of other key BVAB (ie, Prevotella bivia, Fannyhessea vaginae) into the biofilm that alter the transcriptome of the polymicrobial consortium.

Reliability of diagnosing bacterial vaginosis is improved by a standardized method of gram stain interpretation.
TL;DR: The standardized score facilitates future research concerning bacterial vaginosis because it provides gradations of the disturbance of vaginal flora which may be associated with different levels of risk for pregnancy complications.

TL;DR: In this article, the role of infection in prematurity was investigated in women who delivered prematurely and compared with those who delivered at term, using demographic and obstetrical characteristics, chorioamnionic cultures, and placental histologic features.

Abnormal bacterial colonisation of the genital tract and subsequent preterm delivery and late miscarriage
TL;DR: Late miscarriage and pre term delivery are associated with the presence of bacterial vaginosis in early pregnancy, independent of recognised risk factors such as previous preterm delivery.

TL;DR: It is concluded that microbiologic screening in early pregnancy may aid in the assessment of patient risk for preterm delivery and the presence of various vaginal pathogens in earlyregnancy was associated with the subsequent development of premature rupture of membranes or preterm labor.
