Are There Limits to Growth

Abstract: A simple theoretical model of pollution is developed that generates an inverted U-shape relationship between per capita income and environmental quality. This model is then used to study long-run growth. The same inverted U-shape is shown to appear in time series and the prospects for sustained growth are shown to hinge on whether increasingly strict environmental regulation is compatible with a constant rate of return on capital. Implementation is also studied. Tax and voucher schemes are shown to have an advantage over direct regulation because they provide the correct incentives for capital accumulation. Environmental dynamics and the links between growth, volatility and mortality
TL;DR: In this article, the authors construct a model of a growing economy with pollution and show that the interactions between capital accumulation, endogenous lifetime and environmental quality determine both the long run growth rate and the pattern of convergence (i.e., monotonic or cyclical) towards the balanced growth path.

Pollution–income dynamics
TL;DR: In this article, the scale, composition, and technique effects of economic growth on pollution using a multi-output endogenous growth framework are integrated, under certain empirically verifiable parameter conditions economic growth is not sustainable, even under an optimal pollution tax.

The Growth-Environment Trade-Off: Horizontal vs. Vertical Innovations
André Grimaud,Francesco Ricci +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare the policies that match the decentralised economies' paths with the optimal "strong sustainable" growth path, characterised by growth in consumption and improvements in environmental quality.
Stochastic Pollution and Environmental Care in an Endogenous Growth Model
TL;DR: In this article, the impact of pollution and abatement policy within a stochastic endogenous growth model is analyzed, where environmental care is provided by the government and financed through income taxation and government bonds.
