Wingtip Jets Effects on Flow Entrainment and Aerodynamic Loads

: Two-dimensional subcritical flow past a rotating cylinder has been theoretically treated to obtain agreement with the boundary-layer calculations. This study combined a source-wake bound-vortex flow model with a moving-wall boundary-layer calculation to force the final inviscid-flow model to be consistent with boundary-layer theory. Consistency was obtained by an iterative process whereby the separation points of the inviscid-flow model converged toward the separation points found by boundary-layer calculations. The boundary- layer is calculated using the integral-momentum and the integral-energy equations where the family of moving-wall similarity boundary-layer solutions provide relationships between some parameters of the equations.

A Solution for Laminar Flow Past a Rotating Cylinder in Crossflow

This paper reviews the recently introduced concept of unsteady zero-head propulsion (HYPS© ) and its particular attributes offering to revolutionize the conventional turbomachinery and fluid power technologies. The paper continues by underlining some of the fundamentals of the advanced concept that enable the system, in a unique way, to highly efficiently exploit the energy of turbulent and chaotic fluid flows. Extensive simulations and trial runs have highlighted the potential of the system in dealing with shortcomings of the traditional systems when encountered by random and multi-directional upstream flow conditions.Copyright © 2004 by ASME

Advanced Zero Head Propulsion in Review

Using Rosenheads point-vortex approximation with correction terms, the evolution of two symmetrical, counter-rotating, initially cylindrical vortex sheets in an incompressible, potential uid ow is studied Simulations are performed in time up to the occurrence of branch-point curvature singularities in the vortex sheetsgeometries The numerical methods employed are discussed Parameters pertaining to the asymptotics of the Fourier coe¢ cients of the vortex sheetspositions are numerically tted to gain insight into aspects of the singularity formation; these include the order of the branch-point singularities, and the times and locations of singularity formation A smoothing over initial singularity formations is implemented by either the heat equation or through a local application of the vortex blob method in an attempt to gain details into further singularity formations Lastly, the e¤ects of the initially prescribed total circulation around the vortex sheets on their evolutions are studied, both up to the time of singularity formation, and with the implementation of the vortex blob method, past the times of singularity formation
