Abstract: Since their discovery, antimicrobial drugs have proved remarkably effective for the control of bacterial infections. However, it was soon evident that bacterial pathogens were unlikely to surrender unconditionally, because some pathogens rapidly became resistant to many of the first effective drugs. For example, the development of resistance to penicillin in Staphylococcus aureus by the production of a β-lactamase quickly decreased the usefulness of penicillin for serious staphylococcal infections, especially among hospitalized patients, in whom resistant strains are frequently found before they spread to the community.1 Initially, the problem of bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs was solved by the discovery of . . .

Efficacy of Yeast’ Vacuoles as Antimicrobial Agents to Escherichia coli Bacteremia in Rat
TL;DR: The in vivo efficacy of lysosomes was examined in a rat infection model against pathogenic Escherichia coli with varying susceptibilities to standard antimicrobial agents and results support the use of lYSosomes as a bacterial inhibitor of an infected rat model.

Chromogenic Detection of Aminoglycoside Phosphotransferases
TL;DR: Identifying the AGME content of a given strain also requires screening at the DNA level using probes specific to all the known AGME, making surveillance for the appearance of novel enzymes, or the unlikely evolution of those already known, a relatively nonfeasible goal.

Detection of OXA Beta Lactamases Among Clinical Isolates of Acinetobacter Baumannii Isolated from Tehran Hospitals, Iran
TL;DR: Early recognition of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumanniiisolates is a useful tools to prevent their spreading within the hospital environment.
Management of Pneumonia and Blood Stream Infections with New Antibiotic Adjuvant Entity (Ceftriaxone + Sulbactam + Disodium Edetate)- A Novel Way to Spare Carbapenems.
TL;DR: The AAE + colistin therapy has shown better bacteriological and clinical efficacy as compared to meropenem + colistsin in the management of various nosocomial MDR Gram-negative infections.

Beta-lactamases in Enterobacteriaceae in broilers
C.M. Dierikx
- 30 May 2013
TL;DR: Cefotaxime resistance is indicative for the presence of ESBLs or plasmid mediated AmpC beta-lactamases and 94% of broiler meat purchased at different stores in the Netherlands contained similar ESBL-producing bacteria.

beta-Lactamases in laboratory and clinical resistance.
TL;DR: The ability of the prevalent beta-Lactamases to cause resistance to widely used beta-lactams, whether resistance is accurately reflected in routine tests, and the extent to which the antibiogram for an organism can be used to predict the type of beta- lactamase that it produces are considered.

Extended Broad-Spectrum β-Lactamases Conferring Transferable Resistance to Newer β-Lactam Agents in Enterobacteriaceae: Hospital Prevalence and Susceptibility Patterns
TL;DR: Before 1985 at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, resistance to cefotaxime in clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae involved only species producing inducible class 1 beta-lactamase; between November 1985 and April 1987, however, 62 isolates showed decreased susceptibility to cffotaximes, and these enzymes were designated EBS-Bla.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci
TL;DR: Enterococci associated with cultures obtained from burn patients have been on the increase, worldwide, over the past decade and are now among the four most common nosocomial pathogens in the US and have been called the ‘nosocomial infections of the 1990s’.

Major trends in the microbial etiology of nosocomial infection
TL;DR: Major shifts in the etiology of nosocomial infection have occurred in the decade of the 1980s, and the shifts are away from more easily treated pathogens toward more resistant pathogens with fewer options for therapy.
