Abstract: Dear Editors, With regard to Dr Peter Hinchliff's letter (May/June 1991, p. 203) and the Bishop of Ely's book review (Anglicanism and the Christian Church, January/February 1991, p. 58), did not Dr Owen Chadwick suggest (in The Victorian Church?) that 'Anglicanism' was used for the first time in a review by H.]. Rose in the British Magazine of 1837, where it appeared in inverted commas? Certainly Dr Geoffrey Rowell has suggested that 'Anglican Communion' came into use 'at the time of the SPG Jubilee just over a decade before the first Lambeth Conference' (The Synod ofWestminster: Do we need it? SPCK 1986, p. 136). A footnote suggests that Dr Rowell's authority is Alan Stephenson's Anglicanism and the Lambeth Conferences (SPCK 1978, p. 16).
