Abstract: Office hours: MWF, immediately after class or early afternoon (time TBA). We will cover the mathematical foundations of probability theory. The basic terminology and concepts of probability theory include: random experiments, sample or outcome spaces (discrete and continuous case), events and their algebra, probability measures, conditional probability A First Course in Probability (8th ed.) by S. Ross. This is a lively text that covers the basic ideas of probability theory including those needed in statistics. Theoretical concepts are introduced via interesting concrete examples. In 394 I will begin my lectures with the basics of probability theory in Chapter 2. However, your first assignment is to review Chapter 1, which treats elementary counting methods. They are used in applications in Chapter 2. I expect to cover Chapters 2-5 plus portions of 6 and 7. You are encouraged to read ahead. In lectures I will not be able to cover every topic and example in Ross, and conversely, I may cover some topics/examples in lectures that are not treated in Ross. You will be responsible for all material in my lectures, assigned reading, and homework, including supplementary handouts if any.

Ligament-mediated spray formation.
TL;DR: The exponential shape of the overall distribution in the spray coincides with the large excursion wing of these elementary distributions, underlying the crucial role played by the ligament dynamics in building up the broad statistics of sprays.
Flexible Deterministic Packet Marking: An IP Traceback System to Find the Real Source of Attacks
Yang Xiang,Wanlei Zhou,Minyi Guo +2 more
TL;DR: A novel and practical IP traceback system called Flexible Deterministic Packet Marking (FDPM) is presented which provides a defense system with the ability to find out the real sources of attacking packets that traverse through the network.

TL;DR: Central topics such as Hausdorff dimension, self-similar sets and Brownian motion are introduced, as are more specialized topics, including Kakeya sets, capacity, percolation on trees and the traveling salesman theorem.

Båth's law derived from the Gutenberg-Richter law and from aftershock properties
TL;DR: This article showed that the origin of the Bath's law is to be found in the selection procedure used to define mainshocks and aftershocks rather than in any difference in the mechanisms controlling the magnitude of the mainsshock and of the aftershock.

Efficient Synthesis of Gaussian Filters by Cascaded Uniform Filters
TL;DR: This paper describes an approach to implementing a Gaussian Pyramid which requires approximately two addition operations per pixel, per level, per dimension, and examines tradeoffs in choosing an algorithm for Gaussian filtering.
