Abstract: The phenomenon of agostic interactions is reviewed and the nature of the interaction is revisited. A historical perspective is followed by an overview of experimental techniques used to diagnose agostic behavior, and previous interpretations of agostic bonding are presented. A series of simple metal alkyl complexes is considered and a new model for the phenomenon in d(0) systems is developed which sets them apart from agostic late-transition-metal complexes. Factors such as the valence electron count and coordination number of the metal center are revealed to be unimportant in facilitating the interaction in most d(0) systems. The charge density distribution in several transition-metal alkyl complexes is explored by experimental and theoretical techniques, including the powerful "Atoms in Molecules" approach. Local charge concentrations are shown to play an important role in the agostic interaction. Finally, we demonstrate for the first time a way to manipulate and control the magnitude and disposition of such local charge concentrations, and hence the strength of agostic interactions in d(0) metal alkyl complexes.

TL;DR: All neutral dinuclear square-planar complexes having mu-pz or related bridges and planar aromatic ligands completing the coordination spheres found in the CSD show a similar arrangement to those observed in compounds 1-3, consisting of "interlocked dimers" following a herringbone-like pattern.

Hydrogen Bond and Other Lewis Acid-Lewis Base Interactions as Preliminary Stages of Chemical Reactions.
TL;DR: The results of different methods and approaches that are applied in numerous studies to describe the character of interactions are presented here, including the results of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules, of the decomposition of the energy of interaction or of the structure-correlation method.
Interconversion of Molybdenum or Tungsten d2 Styrene Complexes with d0 1-Phenethylidene Analogues.
TL;DR: In this article, the interconversion of the styrene and 1-phenethylidene complexes is modeled as two equilibria involving protonation of Mo(NAr)(styrene)(OSiPh3)2 or Mo(nAr)(CMePh)(OSIPh3)-2 and deprotonation, respectively, of the α or β phenethyl carbon atom.

Atoms in Molecules

TL;DR: The molecular structure hypothesis is a theory that molecules are collections of atoms linked by bonds. It is not directly related to the physics that governs the motions of the nuclei and electrons that make up the atoms and the bonds. This book aims to develop a theory to underpin the molecular structure hypothesis.
