Abstract: A new type of semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), consisting of a singlemode waveguide with a 1/spl times/1 multimode-interferometer (MMI) section, is proposed and experimental results presented. Maintaining single lobed outputs these new MMI amplifiers show improvements of 2 dB in gain and 5 dB in saturation output compared to regular single-stripe SOAs.

Filter-free wavelength conversion using mach-zehnder interferometer with integrated multimode interference semiconductor optical amplifiers
TL;DR: A filter-free wavelength conversion using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with monolithically integrated 2×2 multimode interference semiconductor optical amplifiers (MMI-SOAs) and a non-homogeneous carrier distribution due to the self-imaging properties of the MMI-soA is proposed.

TL;DR: The underlying self-imaging principle in multimode waveguides is described using a guided mode propagation analysis and it is shown that multimode interference couplers offer superior performance, excellent tolerance to polarization and wavelength variations, and relaxed fabrication requirements when compared to alternatives such as directional coupling.
A new structure for high-power TW-SLA (Travelling wave semiconductor laser amplifier)
TL;DR: In this paper, an exponential tapered active layer was proposed to improve the saturation output power and quantum efficiency of a traveling-wave semiconductor laser amplifier by considering both the spatial distributions of the carrier density and the optical field.
