Achlya mitochondrial DNA: gene localization and analysis of inverted repeats.
TL;DR: Analysis of mitochondrial DNA from four strains of the oomycete Achlya has been compared and nine gene loci mapped, showing that the inverted repeat is significantly more stable than single copy sequences, but this stability is limited to the portion encoding the ribosomal RNA genes.

Abstract: Mitochondrial DNA from four strains of the oomycete Achlya has been compared and nine gene loci mapped, including that of the ribosomal protein gene, var1 Examination of the restriction enzyme site maps showed the presence of four insertions relative to a map common to all four strains All the insertions were found in close proximity to genic regions The four strains also cotained the inverted repeat first observed in A ambisexualis (Hudspeth et al 1983), allowing an examination by analysis of retained restriction sites of the evolutionary stability of repeated DNA sequences relative to single copy sequences Although the inverted repeat is significantly more stable than single copy sequences, more detailed analysis indicated that this stability is limited to the portion encoding the ribosomal RNA genes Thus, the apparent evolutionary stability of the repeat does not appear to derive from the inverted repeat structure per se

Estimation of relatedness between phytophthora species by analysis of mitochondrial dna
TL;DR: An unrooted phylogenetic network based on nucleotide sequence divergence values indicated that several evolutionary lines exist for P. megasperma, and numerical analyses of conserved and variable restriction cleavage sites also support the separation of Pmg and Pmm into distinct species.

Mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms in Laccaria bicolor, L. laccata, L. proxima and L. amethystina

Restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the mitochondrial DNA of Phytophthora megasperma isolated from soybean, alfalfa, and fruit trees.
TL;DR: The mtDNAs from 24 small oogonial soybean-specific Phytophthora megasperma f.sp.megasperma and the high-temperature isolate had restriction patterns that differed from each other and from those of Pmg and Pmm, and the restriction patterns of the nuclear DNAs also distinguished these isolates from Pmg or Pmm.

Polymorphism and uniparental inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in Physarum polycephalum.
TL;DR: The transmission pattern of mtDNA during plasmodium formation was studied by mating pairs of amoebal strains that contained mtDNA of different types, and it is clear that this uniparental transmission of mt DNA does not depend upon random partitioning either of mitochondria or ofmtDNA molecules during cell division.

Mathematical model for studying genetic variation in terms of restriction endonucleases
Masatoshi Nei,Wen-Hsiung Li +1 more
TL;DR: A mathematical model for the evolutionary change of restriction sites in mitochondrial DNA is developed and a measure called "nucleotide diversity" is proposed to express the degree of polymorphism in a population at the nucleotide level.

Rapid evolution of animal mitochondrial DNA.
TL;DR: The rate of evolution of the mitochondrial genome appears to exceed that of the single-copy fraction of the nuclear genome by a factor of about 10 and is likely to be an extremely useful molecule to employ for high-resolution analysis of the evolutionary process.
