Abstract: In this paper, we develop a system for active image-based rendering (IBR) Active IBR is a framework that is capable of estimating the final rendering quality and capturing the next view at the position where the rendering quality can be improved the most The result is a non-uniform capturing scheme for IBR Experimental results on synthetic scenes have shown that active IBR outperforms uniformly captured IBR In this paper, we set up an active IBR system that can capture real objects with off-the-shelf components We show that our system can capture objects more intelligently than uniform capturing

Active Rearranged Capturing of Image-Based Rendering Scenes—Theory and Practice
Cha Zhang,Tsuhan Chen +1 more
TL;DR: This paper proposes to capture image-based rendering scenes using a novel approach called active rearranged capturing (ARC), given the total number of available cameras, which moves them strategically on the camera plane in order to minimize the sum of squared rendering errors for a given set of light rays to be rendered.
Active Multicamera Networks: From Rendering to Surveillance
TL;DR: Active multicamera networks are being used to enhance surveillance applications for which a large area needs to be monitored and to monitor larger areas and provide more continuous coverage of moving targets.
Nonuniform sampling of image-based rendering data with the position-interval-error (PIE) function
Cha Zhang,Tsuhan Chen +1 more
- 16 Jun 2003
TL;DR: Experimental results demonstrate that the non-uniform sampling approaches outperform the traditional uniform methods.

Light field rendering

TL;DR: This paper describes a sampled representation for light fields that allows for both efficient creation and display of inward and outward looking views, and describes a compression system that is able to compress the light fields generated by more than a factor of 100:1 with very little loss of fidelity.

TL;DR: A new method for capturing the complete appearance of both synthetic and real world objects and scenes, representing this information, and then using this representation to render images of the object from new camera positions.
Modeling and rendering architecture from photographs: a hybrid geometry- and image-based approach
Paul Debevec,Camillo J. Taylor,Jitendra Malik +2 more
- 01 Aug 1996
TL;DR: This work presents a new approach for modeling and rendering existing architectural scenes from a sparse set of still photographs, which combines both geometry-based and imagebased techniques, and presents view-dependent texture mapping, a method of compositing multiple views of a scene that better simulates geometric detail on basic models.
A Theory of Shape by Space Carving
TL;DR: A provably-correct algorithm is given, called Space Carving, for computing the 3D shape of an unknown, arbitrarily-shaped scene from multiple photographs taken at known but arbitrarily-distributed viewpoints to capture photorealistic shapes that accurately model scene appearance from a wide range of viewpoints.

Plenoptic modeling: an image-based rendering system
Leonard McMillan,Gary Bishop +1 more
- 15 Sep 1995
TL;DR: An image-based rendering system based on sampling, reconstructing, and resampling the plenoptic function is presented and a novel visible surface algorithm and a geometric invariant for cylindrical projections that is equivalent to the epipolar constraint defined for planar projections are introduced.
