Abstract: The two-dimensional Fourier transform model proposed for signal processing in the visual system is given an analytical formalism and is further augmented to a three-dimensional transform to include time. Yet another generalization incorporates a complementary system of expansion in polar coordinates. It is proposed that cortical cells sensitive to moving gratings are in fact narrow-band spatio-temporal frequency filters. The model proceeds with an integration along the temporal frequency axis, thereby obtaining a "frozen" picture of a dynamic pattern. This gives a new interpretation to the functional significance of the columnar organization of the striate cortex. A treatment of the bandwidth of cortical neurons clarifies the problem of the different bandwidths previously reported.

Optical flow using spatiotemporal filters
TL;DR: A model is presented that combines the outputs of a set of spatiotemporal motion-energy filters to estimate image velocity and a measure of image-flow uncertainty is formulated; preliminary results indicate that this uncertainty measure may be used to recognize ambiguity due to the aperture problem.

TL;DR: It is shown that there exists a tradeoff between the number of frequency components used per position and thenumber of such clusters (sampling rate) utilized along the spatial coordinate.

Derivation of optical flow using a spatiotemporal-frequency approach
TL;DR: It is shown that STF derivation promises substantially improved performance over the flow computation methods, and provides a partial explanation of motion coherence as observed in human vision.

VLSI Architectures for Multidimensional Fourier Transform Processing
Izidor Gertner,Moshe Shamash +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the lower bound for the computation of the multidimensional transform is O(n2 log2 n) and an optimal architecture based on arrays of processors computing one-dimensional Fourier transforms and a rotation network or rotation array is proposed.

A Theory for Invariant Object Recognition in the Frontoparallel Plane
TL;DR: A new computational theory for position, size, and orientation invariant recognition of planar gray-scale forms in frontoparallel view is suggested which employs a spatial-frequency representation which approximates the complex-logarithmic conformally mapped Wigner distribution of agray-scale image.

Psychophysical evidence for sustained and transient detectors in human vision
TL;DR: The sensitivity to temporally modulated sinusoidal gratings was determined and two thresholds could be distinguished: the contrast at which flicker could be perceived and the Contrast at which the spatial structure became distinct.

The visual cortex as a spatial frequency analyser
TL;DR: Unitary responses to sinusoidal gratings either moving or alternating in phase have been investigated in the optic tract, lateral geniculate body and visual cortex of the cat as a function of the spatial frequency, position of the grating with respect to the cell receptive field and grating contrast.
