TL;DR: The second version of the living review paper dedicated to the decadal methane budget, integrating results of top-down studies (atmospheric observations within an atmospheric inverse-modeling framework) and bottom-up estimates (including process-based models for estimating land surface emissions and atmospheric chemistry, inventories of anthropogenic emissions, and data-driven extrapolations) as discussed by the authors.

TL;DR: This Consensus Statement documents the central role and global importance of microorganisms in climate change biology and puts humanity on notice that the impact of climate change will depend heavily on responses of micro organisms, which are essential for achieving an environmentally sustainable future.
Estimating the volume and age of water stored in global lakes using a geo-statistical approach
TL;DR: A geo-statistical model is developed to estimate the volume of global lakes with a surface area of at least 10 ha based on the surrounding terrain information and calculates mean and median hydraulic residence times for all lakes to be 1,834 days and 456 days, respectively.

Gradient-dominated ecosystems: sources and regulatory functions of dissolved organic matter in freshwater ecosystems
TL;DR: The emergent wetland and littoral components of the land-water zone are functionally coupled by the amounts and types of dissolved organic matter that are released, processed, transported to, and then further processed within the recipient waters.

Automated mapping of water bodies using Landsat multispectral data
TL;DR: The assessment of the role of lakes and impoundments at regional and global scales, e.g., in biogeochemical cycles, requires good estimates of the areal extent and shape of water bodies as mentioned in this paper.

Atmospheric carbon burial in modern lake basins and its significance for the global carbon budget
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the contribution of lakes and artificial reservoirs in counteracting man-made CO 2 emissions in arid to semiarid climate which precipitate a major part of their atmosphere-derived dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) as carbonate.

The regional abundance and size distribution of lakes and reservoirs in the United States and implications for estimates of global lake extent
TL;DR: This article analyzed complete geospatial data for the 3.5 million lakes and reservoirs larger than 0.001 km2 in the contiguous United States (excluding the Laurentian Great Lakes) and identified their regional distribution characteristics.

Disappearing Lakes in Semiarid Northern China: Drivers and Environmental Impact
TL;DR: The results confirmed the prevalence of drought-induced lake shrinkage and desiccation at a regional scale, which has been sustained since the year 2000, and highlighted an accelerated shrinkage of individual lakes by human water use in the agriculture-dominated regions.
