A general method applicable to the search for similarities in the amino acid sequence of two proteins
TL;DR: A computer adaptable method for finding similarities in the amino acid sequences of two proteins has been developed and it is possible to determine whether significant homology exists between the proteins to trace their possible evolutionary development.

Expression Cloning and Characterization of ROAT1 THE BASOLATERAL ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER IN RAT KIDNEY
TL;DR: ROAT1-mediated PAH transport was saturable, with an estimated K m of 70 μm, and is identical to those previously described for the basolateral α-ketoglutarate/PAH exchanger in isolated membrane vesicles or intact renal tubules.

TL;DR: These analyses reveal somatic mutations in chromatin-regulating genes MLL, M LL2, MLL3 and ARID1A in 20% of patients that are associated with improved survival and have implications for new avenues of therapeutic intervention.
Unsupervised Pattern Discovery in Speech
Alex Park,James Glass +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown how pattern discovery can be used to automatically acquire lexical entities directly from an untranscribed audio stream by exploiting the structure of repeating patterns within the speech signal.
Phosphoproteome Analysis of E. coli Reveals Evolutionary Conservation of Bacterial Ser/Thr/Tyr Phosphorylation

TL;DR: The results establish Ser/Thr/Tyr phosphorylation as a common posttranslational modification in Eubacteria, present since the onset of cellular life and demonstrated that bacterial phosphoproteins and phosphorylated residues are significantly more conserved than their nonphosphorylated counterparts.

Molecular characterization of a kinesin-related antigen of Leishmania chagasi that detects specific antibody in African and American visceral leishmaniasis.
J. M. Burns,Wayne G. Shreffler,Darin R. Benson,Hashim W. Ghalib,Roberto Badaró,Reed Steven G +5 more
TL;DR: The cloning of a Leishmania chagasi antigen gene and an evaluation of leishmaniasis patient antibody responses to the recombinant protein, rK39, show that rK 39 may replace crude parasite antigens as a basis for serological diagnosis of visceral leish maniasis.

An improved method of testing for evolutionary homology.
TL;DR: A more sensitive method of searching for a homologous relation between two proteins is presented and results for α - and β -hemoglobin, for which the homology is already known, are presented and shown to be consistent.
