Abstract: A comparison was made between Dorbanex® and the standard treatment for constipation in 35 geriatric patients in hospital. Casanthranol and dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, supplemented by bisacodyl, the usual routine treatment, produced better results in 16 patients. Dorbanex was superior in 19 patients, although 4 with senile dementia and faecal incontinence developed a perianal rash which resolved on stopping treatment. The aetiology of the skin reaction is discussed.
