Abstract: This paper presents a brief overview of a control systems framework for understanding normal and abnormal posture, with a special emphasis on postural control during arm movements. The need for meaningful and valid definitions of postural output is discussed. A distinction is drawn between the joint posture and balance outputs of the system. The roles of commands and perturbing inputs in controlling and disturbing joint posture and balance are described. The effects of initial conditions on command inputs and postural outputs are considered. Mechanisms for correcting postural errors are described, with a major focus on active closed-loop and open-loop control processes. The method of objectively describing system behavior by the gains, time delays, and thresholds of input-output functions is presented. All concepts are developed in relation to their clinical implications.

Postural control in older adults
TL;DR: This review will describe the impact of impaired postural control on older adults, operationalize what is meant byPostural control, and outline posturalcontrol test batteries to identify how age and disease-related organ system changes might affect training to improve posturalControl.

Ranges of postural stability and their changes in the elderly
TL;DR: The elderly approached maximum voluntary excursion in a less controlled manner exhibiting greater variability in their lean paths, and had greater range of oscillations at their maximum voluntaryexcursion.

The effect of T'ai Chi Chuan training on balance, kinesthetic sense, and strength
TL;DR: It appears that T'ai Chi Chuan presents a low-stress method to enhance stability, selected kinesthetic sense, and strength of knee extension.

Characterization and modeling of postural steadiness in the elderly: a review
TL;DR: The methods that have been used to evaluate the static ( postural steadiness) and dynamic (postural stability) performance of the postural control system are discussed and research of age-related changes in the posturally control system is summarized.

Arm reaching improvements with short-term practice depend on the severity of the motor deficit in stroke
TL;DR: The results suggest that even one session of repetitive practice of a multi-joint pointing task leads to improvements in movement performance-based outcome measures, but the mechanisms of improvement may vary with the individual's level of motor impairment.

The post-stroke hemiplegic patient. 1. a method for evaluation of physical performance.
TL;DR: The findings in this study substantiate the validity of ontogenetic principles as applicable to the assessment of motor behaviour in hemiplegic patients, and foocus the importance of early therapeutic measures against contractures.

Central programming of postural movements: adaptation to altered support-surface configurations.
Fay B. Horak,L. M. Nashner +1 more
TL;DR: Exposing subjects to horizontal surface perturbations while standing on support surfaces intermediate in length between the shortest and longest elicited more complex postural movements and associated muscle activation patterns that resembled ankle and hip strategies combined in different temporal relations.

Adaptation to altered support and visual conditions during stance: patients with vestibular deficits
L. M. Nashner,Black Fo,Wall C rd +2 more
TL;DR: The more mildly afflicted patients experienced instability not so much because of the loss of vestibular inputs directly to posture but because of their inappropriate responses to proprioceptive inputs and vision.

A sequence of postural movements precedes voluntary movement
Simon Bouisset,M. Zattara +1 more
TL;DR: Voluntary movement of the upper limb is preceded by postural movements occurring in the lower limbs and the pelvis that represent part of a central motor program and tends to reduce the early perturbations of the body's center of gravity.

Postural readjustments induced by linear motion of visual scenes.
TL;DR: From the dynamic relationships between the velocity of the moving visual scene and the amplitude of sway, it was concluded that the postural readjustment is proportional to a low pass filtering of the logarithm of the velocity.
