Abstract: This brief history of topographical anatomy begins with Egyptian medical papyri and the works known collectively as the Greco-Arabian canon, the time line then moves on to the excitement of discovery that characterised the Renaissance, the increasing regulatory and legislative frameworks introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries, and ends with a consideration of the impact of technology that epitomises the period from the late 19th century to the present day. This paper is based on a lecture I gave at the Winter Meeting of the Anatomical Society in Cambridge in December 2015, when I was awarded the Anatomical Society Medal.

Ahmed Radwan,Louise Emsell,Jeroen Blommaert,Andrey Zhylka,Silvia Kovacs,Tom Theys,Nico Sollmann,Patrick Dupont,Stefan Sunaert +8 more
TL;DR: Virtual Brain Grafting is demonstrated to be a fully-automated, open-source workflow to reliably parcellate magnetic resonance imaging datasets in the presence of a broad spectrum of focal brain pathologies, including large, bilateral, intra- and extra-axial, heterogeneous lesions with and without mass effect.

An untold story: The important contributions of Muslim scholars for the understanding of human anatomy.
TL;DR: It is shown that Arabic speakers and Persians made important advances in human anatomy well before Vesalius, and there were apparently neither advances made by Muslims nor by Westerners for more than 1000 years.

A default mode of brain function: a brief history of an evolving idea.
TL;DR: This work determined that activity decreases in functional neuroimaging data did not arise from activations in the resting state, and thereby implied the existence of a default mode of brain function.

Commentary A default mode of brain function: A brief history of an evolving idea
Marcus E. Raichle,Abraham Z. Snyder +1 more
- 01 Jan 2007
TL;DR: The concept of a default mode of brain function arose out of a focused need to explain the appearance of activity decreases in functional neuroimaging data when the control state was passive visual fixation or eyes closed resting as discussed by the authors.

The vascular territories (angiosomes) of the body: experimental study and clinical applications
G I Taylor,J.H. Palmer +1 more
TL;DR: The blood supply to the skin and underlying tissues was investigated by ink injection studies, dissection, perforator mapping and radiographic analysis of fresh cadavers and isolated limbs, giving rise to the angiosome concept.

Medical Education in the Anatomical Sciences: The Winds of Change Continue to Blow.
TL;DR: Comparison between the data sets suggests several key points some of which include: decreased total hours in gross anatomy and neuroscience/neuroanatomy courses, increased use of virtual microscopy in microscopic anatomy courses, and decreased laboratory hours in embryology courses.
