1/f noise in human cognition
TL;DR: In this article, a series of experiments where subjects repeatedly attempted to replicate given target intervals were conducted, and the time course of this error was measured in a series-of-experiments, where the errors in both spatial and temporal replications were found to fluctuate as 1/f noises.

Abstract: When a person attempts to produce from memory a given spatial or temporal interval, there is inevitably some error associated with the estimate. The time course of this error was measured in a series of experiments where subjects repeatedly attempted to replicate given target intervals. Sequences of the errors in both spatial and temporal replications were found to fluctuate as 1/f noises. 1/f noise is encountered in a wide variety of physical systems and is theorized to be a characteristic signature of complexity.

Cerebellar and basal ganglia contributions to interval timing
Jörn Diedrichsen,Richard B. Ivry,J Pressing +2 more
- 01 Jan 2003
TL;DR: The results suggest a dissociation between the two groups: the patients with cerebellar lesions exhibited noisy internal timing while the gain in error correction was reduced in Parkinson patients, indicating how the cerebellum and basal ganglia may make differential contributions to tasks that require consistent timing.

A Review of Theoretical Perspectives in Cognitive Science on the Presence of Scaling in Coordinated Physiological and Cognitive Processes
Maarten L. Wijnants
- 10 Feb 2014
TL;DR: This paper reviews neurological, physiological, and cognitive studies that corroborate the claim that 1/f scaling is most clearly present in healthy, well-coordinated activities and concludes that 1-f scaling in living systems appears to reflect their genuine complex nature, rather than constituting a coincidental side-effect.
Long-range correlation in synchronization and syncopation tapping: a linear phase correction model.
TL;DR: This model is an extension of the linear phase correction model for synchronization tapping and completes previous modeling solutions proposed for self-paced and synchronization tapping, for a unifying framework of event-based timing.
Multifractal analyses of response time series: A comparative study
TL;DR: The results indicate that all multifractal analysis has individual pros and cons related to sample size, multifractality, and the presence of additive noise and trends in the response time series.
Experimental control of scaling behavior: what is not fractal?
TL;DR: It is argued from results that the goal of the fractal literature should be to bring scaling behavior under experimental control, and that evidence for fractal behavior was strongest for the circular track.

Self-organized criticality: An explanation of the 1/ f noise
TL;DR: It is shown that dynamical systems with spatial degrees of freedom naturally evolve into a self-organized critical point, and flicker noise, or 1/f noise, can be identified with the dynamics of the critical state.

Self-organized criticality
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that certain extended dissipative dynamical systems naturally evolve into a critical state, with no characteristic time or length scales, and the temporal fingerprint of the self-organized critical state is the presence of flicker noise or 1/f noise; its spatial signature is the emergence of scale-invariant (fractal) structure.

Low-frequency fluctuations in solids: 1/f noise

TL;DR: In this article, the authors deal with selected topics regarding the properties of simple condensed matter systems, especially metals, and find that considerable experimental and conceptual progress has been made, but specific physical processes mostly remain to be identified.
