TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of virtual reality (VR) enhanced learning environment on the 7th-grade students' academic achievements in reading and writing in English in Izmir, Turkey.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of virtual reality (VR) enhanced learning environment on the 7th-grade students’ academic achievements in reading and writing in English. Within the scope of the experimental application of the research, the “planets” unit topic was selected from the 7th-grade syllabus of the 2018 Turkish English Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum for primary and secondary schools and a VR application about planets was developed for the research. In this study, a quasi-experimental research design was used. The achievement test, which was developed by the researchers before the experiment, was applied to both 15 experimental group and 11 control group students, who were volunteers and who were selected randomly in the seventh grade of a public secondary school in Izmir, Turkey. Before the study, the students in the experimental group were informed how to use VR headset and components. After a total of 3 weeks of implementation, the achievement test was applied to the students in the experimental and control groups. It is found that the experimental implementation has a positive effect on the academic achievement of the experimental group students regarding the reading and writing in English. In addition, the findings reveal that immersive VR is superior to frontal teaching by teachers and all other classical materials especially textbooks by delivering students sensory information in three dimensions. This study is based on quantitative research. For that reason, further studies based on qualitative research design can provide extra insights to get more educational evidence on the use of VR-Applications in English teaching.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed a Basic Qualitative Inquiry on three participants aged between 18 to 21 years old to understand how emotion regulation skills can assist adolescents to cope with drug abuse, while dealing with emotional problems caused by internal conflicts, stress, family issues, and peer pressure.
Abstract: Adolescence, a transition between childhood and adulthood is viewed as a phase of increased decision making, pressure and understanding one’s self. In search of their identity, adolescents experienced peer pressures and tend to engage in social problems such as drug abuse which leads them to believe in expressing their inner selves. Research on emotion regulation among adolescents has burgeoned in recent years to better understand their emotional development and ability to control emotion. Based on Gross’ Emotion Regulation Theory, emotion regulation is an emotion management skill that require individuals to better manage their emotion in an emotional experience. Past studies have indicated that this skill can help to change the way a situation is interpreted thereby decreasing its emotional impact. This paper aims to understand how emotion regulation skills can assist adolescents to cope with drug abuse, while dealing with emotional problems caused by internal conflicts, stress, family issues, and peer pressure. This study employed a Basic Qualitative Inquiry on three participants aged between 18 to 21 years old. It was found that avoiding venues associated with drug abuse, managing their thoughts, and avoiding non-supportive friends; are some methods that have helped the adolescents to have better control of themselves. This study hopes to contribute in better understanding the coping skills that can be developed to assist students who are involved in drug abuse.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the extent to which scenario-based learning (SBL) method used in a Statistics for Research in Education course were related to improvement in postgraduate students' attitude toward statistics.
Abstract: Teaching introductory statistics to postgraduate students from multidisciplinary background and with diverse mathematics ability is a huge challenge that many statistics lecturers do not deny. The large ability range can make it very difficult for lecturers to fine tune the right level for effective course delivery. Even though an introductory statistics course has been seen as a necessary component for many postgraduate programs, research has shown that students have come to perceive statistics negatively. One suggestion for improving students’ attitude toward statistics is through the use of innovative instructional approaches. This paper investigates the extent to which scenario-based learning (SBL) method used in a Statistics for Research in Education course were related to improvement in postgraduate students’ attitude toward statistics. Nineteen students who enrolled in the course during the first semester of 2019/2020 were taught using the SBL instructional method. Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics-36 (SATS-36) was used to measure six statistics attitude components at the beginning and at the end of the course. Overall results show that there is a difference between mean score of attitude before and after exposure to scenario-based learning method. Scenario based learning has some positive effect on student attitude toward statistics.

27 Mar 2020-Malaysian Online Journal of Educational Sciences
TL;DR: Probability is not about predicting whether a particular event will take place but about determining how the probability is propagated over the possible events.
Abstract: Various solving strategies in probability of events could complicate the students in choosing the best strategy in problem solutions. This research was carried out to identify the favourite solving strategies used by college students to solve probability and event problems. As a preliminary of a case study, only three students were selected as participants. In this study, the participants have learnt the probability topic in secondary schools as they must apply the knowledge in college level. Think aloud analysis was used to evaluate the influence thought and behaviour of the participants when solving the task. An in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted together with the think-aloud analysis to gain rich and thick descriptions from the participants. Protocols were coded and analyzed to determine the strategies used and the reason of choosing those strategies to solve the problems. Results indicated that participants loved to use tree diagram as solving strategies in solving probability problems without knowing the accuracy of its effect. Therefore, educators can plan strategies, set problems, or prepare activities for students to understand the probabilistic situation and probabilistic reasoning to solve problems. Otherwise the students are merely copying procedures presented in class.

TL;DR: In this article, a case study with 41 pre-service science teachers participating in an education technologies and material design class was conducted to determine the perceptions of teachers on alternative assessment tools they developed using a feedback process.
Abstract: This study aimed to determine the perceptions of pre-service science teachers on alternative assessment tools they developed using a feedback process. The pre-service teachers received written and verbal feedback during the process; however, they decided themselves to do revisions or not. Consequently, the second purpose of the study was to investigate why the pre-service teachers did not make revisions entirely based on the feedback which was given by researchers. This was a case study with 41 pre-service science teachers participating in “Education Technologies and Material Design” class. Data was collected using perception form including open ended questions as well as interviews conducted with the participants. The written explanations provided by the pre-service teachers to the open-ended questions and interview data were analysed using descriptive analysis. The participants’ perceptions of the alternative assessment tools created using a feedback process were categorized themes including suitability to the objectives, daily life association, visual aspects, and higher-order thinking. The study results revealed that the participants perceived themselves as deficient especially in terms of higher-order thinking and daily life association categories. Additionally, the rate of participants benefiting from the feedback process was limited. Study results suggested that practice-based classes in undergraduate teacher training programs may be conducted using rubrics and feedback process. Feedback given to teachers about their performances would be beneficial.
