Abstract: This study aims to describe the factors causing the Javanese language use shift and the maintenance strategies and attempts. It employed the qualitative approach with a focus on the mapping of maintenance models in the Province of Yogyakarta Special Territory. The findings are as follows. First, the factors causing the shift include: (a) perceptions of the Javanese language, (b) complexity of societal life, (c) the number of Javanese speakers, and (d) the use of Javanese in the family. Second, the attempts made include: (a) the strengthening of the philosophy of the Javanese culture and language, (b) the Javanese language competitions and festivals, (c) the dissemination of moral values in Javanese expressions, (d) the development of Javanese performance arts, and (e) the use of Javanese in institutions. Third, the maintenance strategies include the uses of Javanese as: (a) a means of communication, (b) a factor uniting language and culture, (c) a local wisdom, (d) a local government’s policy, (e) a subject in education, (g) NGO activities, and (h) Javanese journalism.

Abstract: This study aims to produce a validated guidebook for Authentic Assessment in Language Learning. The research activities included the guidebook development and the product was validated by three assessment experts and five teachers as stakeholders. The validation was conducted through a questionnaire and a feedback sheet and the results were used to revise the draft to produce the final guidebook. The guidebook consists of the front page, three main chapters, references, a glossary, and an index. The results of the validation show that the guidebook is good. Conceptually it is dependable and as a guidebook it is relatively easy to use in language learning activities at school. According to the validators, it is useful to improve the language learning quality.

The data were collected through reading and note taking. The results show that the forms of grammatical units of euphemisms and dysphemisms in Spiegel Online consist of words, phrases and sentences. The backgrounds of the use of euphemisms in Spiegel Online are: 1) to avoid the use of words which can cause panic or anxiety; 2) to mitigate speech; 3) to diminish or tone down a painful evocation or tragedy; 4) to engage in diplomacy or rhetoric purposes; 5) to replace forbidden words, taboos, vulgar or negative imaged-words; 6) to hide something; 7) to respect or appreciate others; and 8) to tease or criticize others smoothly. Abstract: This study aims to reveal and formulate Javanese philosophical values and philosophical foundations in Serat Centhini. It was a qualitative descriptive study. The data source was the Serat Centhini text. The research steps included data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The data were analyzed using the hermeneutic and heuristic techniques. The findings are as follows. First, Javanese philosophical values in Serat Centhini are reflected in Javanese cultural contents and philosophy reflecting the Javanese society when Serat Centhini was written. The Javanese philosophy in Serat Centhiniis reflected by the life perfection value (ngudi kasampurnan) and the philosophy of origin and destination (sangkan paraning dumadi). Second, the philosophy in Serat Centhini is reflected in the ontological, epistemological, and axiological foundations.

Abstract: This study aims to produce a model of Indonesian language skill learning with multicultural contexts. It employed a research and development design and the tryout was conducted through action research. The model of multicultural learning integrated into the Indonesian language subject is divided into four stages, i.e. orientation/apperception, exploration, concept finding, and application. The model is supplemented by a learning package guide, a syllabus, lesson plans, learning materials, and evaluation. The model has a sequence consisting of six stages, i.e. orientation, hypothesis, definition, exploration, proof, and generalization. The model has been tried out in three schools in Central Java.

Abstract: This research and development study aims to produce models of teaching kits for writing based on the genre process approach for junior high school students. The procedure employed the R2D2 model, consisting of three main stages, i.e. (1) definition, (2) design and development, and (3) dissemination. The data consisted of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using the domain analysis technique with critical and reflective principles, while the quantitative data were analyzed using t-test with SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The study produces five models, i.e.: (1) a syllabus model, (2) a lesson plan model, (3) a learning materials model, (4) an evaluation instrument model, and (5) a teacher guide model of the teaching of writing. Based on the data analysis, the five models of teaching kits for writing are effective to improve the students’ writing ability.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the forms of the shift of Javanese in the Samin community in the domestic domain. The data were collected from two locations where the Samin community lives, i.e. Tambak Hamlet, Sumber Village, Kradenan District and Tanduran Hamlet, Kemantren Village, Kedungtuban District. The data were ethnographically analyzed. The findings show that there is a shift of Javanese in the Samin community from the ngoko Javanese to the krama Javanese. The ngoko language, which is the characteristic of Javanese in the Samin community, is used in a variety of domains. However, due to a variety of causes, the Samin community does not use the ngoko Javanese for all purposes. It is used only in the domestic domain and neighborhood involving the members of the Samin community only. In other domains such as social and educational domains, the ngoko Javanese is not used anymore and there is a shift to the krama Javanese.

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the possibilities of alleviating the damage of the environment as a result of industrialization driven by the capitalist system as seen in Life in the Iron Mills, a novella by Rebecca Harding Davis. This study applied ecocriticism which succinctly might be defined as study of the relation between literature and environment conducted in a commitment to environmental praxis. The findings show that there should be the actions of moral principles as a consideration in social policies, politics, and economy. The principles include respect, responsibility, love and care, simplicity, and justice. These actions allow changes from the material-oriented lifestyle to the simple lifestyle and are done by an individual or community to encourage the reform. Everybody should jointly and actively practice the environmental ethics.

The data resources were children’s contemporary fiction books and responses of the fifth grade students of elementary schools. The data were collected through content analysis and analytic reflection. The findings show that: (a) the students’ responses are positive; (b) the books have a single, simple, and linear plot/narrative structure, have a dramatic and narrative style, and have various themes and values; and (c) children’s contemporary fiction contributes to the literacy improvement.

Abstract: This study aims to describe woman trafficking practice in modern Javanese fiction. Woman trafficking was analyzed based on the ideology and causes using New Historicism theory. The findings show that woman trafficking experienced by the characters in all of the stories is the same. They are deceived by procurers and sold as prostitutes in Indonesia and abroad. There are three causes of womantrafficking, i.e. a view looking down on women, woman dependency, and women’s poverty and low education. The stories of woman trafficking support feminism more. Women as victims of woman trafficking can get freedom and autonomy. Feminism ideology is also supported by men. The male characters help the female characters release themselves from woman trafficking by accepting them as their partners.

Abstract: This study aims to describe code switching in classroom communication from the sociolinguistic point of view. The research subjects comprised 12 English teachers in senior high schools in the Province of Yogyakarta Special Territory. The data were code switching utterances from English to Indonesian and vice versa in English language learning in the classroom. The data were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive method. The findings show that code switching has three functions, i.e. (a) material delivery, (b) classroom management, and (3) discourse markers. With reference to such functions, code switching in English language learning can be made as far as it satisfies academic functions. As the students’ English mastery improves, the use of code switching needs to be reduced.

The model was adapte from the Reflective, Recursive Design and Development (R2D2) model by Willis and the model of spoken language assessment by O’Malley & Pierce. The product of the development is a set of authentic assessment in the spoken Indonesian language skill in senior high schools, consisting of (a) assessment planning, (b) assessment mapping, (c) assessment instrument and rubric, (d) evaluation standard, and (e) score interpretation. The product is equipped with a VCD containing the implementation model to help teachers conduct authentic assessment. In general, the developed authentic assessment model is effective to evaluate the spoken Indonesian language skill in senior high schools.

This study tries to reveal the social construction, comprising men’s and women’s positions and roles in society. Human relations and life nuances due to the relations vary, depending on the problems that each actor encounters. Human beings have problems related to family and society. The findings show that in the Angkola culture: (1) it is necessary to pay a visit to parents wherever one lives because this has effects on life, (2) one must keep promise, (3) there is still a belief in spirits, and (4) the husband-wife interaction is a one way interaction, with the husband’s power being stronger than the wife’s.

Abstract: This study aimed to describe the improvement in the learning of appreciative short-story listening through a cooperative learning strategy. It employed an action research design. The data were those of the implementation of the learning of appreciative listening, which included pre-listening, listening, and post-liste ning stages. The data collecting instruments consisted of an observation guide, accompanied by a tape recorder and field notes, and a rubric for the analysis of the appreciative listening results. The findings showed that the cooperative learning strategy was effective in the whole learning process of listening. The students attained a mean of 91.6 (very good) at the end of Cycle I and a mean of 93 (very good) at the end of Cycle II.

Abstract: Four research questions are proposed related to (1) students’ English proficiency levels at the university and faculty levels, (2) their English proficiency levels in each study program, (3) their proficiency in Listening, Structure, and Reading, and (4) possible activities as follows-ups of the TOEFL-Like tests. Using the survey research design, the study involved 24,909 YSU new students of the academic years 2005–2009. Data were analyzed quantitatively using the mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentages. The results are as follows. First, on the university level, students attain a mean score of 367 (intermediate) with a standard deviation of 50.65 (high homogeneity). On the faculty level, they attain a mean score of 378.81 (FMIPA), 372.83 (FISE), 367.18 (FT), 363.83 (FBS), 363.77 (FIP), and 356.44 (FIK). Second, highest scores are achieved by four study programs (400 or higher), the second by 13 study programs (375 – 399), the third by 45 study programs (350 – 374), and the lowest scores by eight study programs (349 or lower). Third, the score attainment is 35.5% (Reading), 31.25% (Structure), and 27.2% (Listening). Fourth, possible follow-up activities are elevation of students’ TOEFL scores, course placements, improvement of MKU English, planning and implementation of international programs, and graduation requirement for S-1.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the upper class characteristics of the characters in novels with the Javanese local color to develop the nation’s character. It employed content analysis using the descriptive-analytic technique. The data sources were novels with the Javanese local color representing certain eras. The findings are as follows. First, people belong to the upper class because of inheritance and hard work. Second, there are two categories of upper class people, i.e. traditional ones with Dutch education and Islamic religion and new ones with university education and professional and structural positions. Third, they have good characters. Fourth, the characters of Javanese upper class people can serve as a basis to build and develop the nation’s character. Fifth, the character development can be carried out in the family by emphasizing religious attitudes and through humanity knowledge development emphasizing interpersonal, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Abstract: This article presents the results of the study investigating the relationship between the students’ attitudes towards English and their English achievements in bilingual and regular classes and investigating the differences. The study was conducted in a junior high school in Manado. There are 30 Year VIII students in each bilingual class and each regular class. The results are as follows. First, there is a significant correlation between the students’ attitudes towards English and their achievements. Second, there is a significant difference in their English achievements between bilingual class students and regular students. Third, female students have higher English achievements than male students. Bilingual class students have more positive attitudes and higher English learning achievements than regular class students.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the moral values in Javanese traditional expressions and Chinese proverbs. The data on Javanese expressions were collected from Javanese course books and Kasusastran Jawi and those on Chinese proverbs were collected from Pepatah China Kuno untuk Generasi Modern. The data were analyzed by classifying the themes and comparing Javanese traditional expressions with Chinese proverbs. The findings are as follows. First, the themes include (a) self-control, (b) ethics of marriage and social life, (c) leadership ethics, and (d) ethics of managing a country and nation. Second, the similarity in themes shows a common way of life in Javanese and Chinese societies. This can serve as a means of understanding the cultures of the two ethnic groups so that there is a close relationship and mutual respect.

Abstract: This study aimed to describe the improvement of the quality of the report writing learning process and the improvement of students’ report writing skills through the contextual approach. This study was an action research study employing John Elliott’s model consisting of two cycles. The subjects were Year VIII E students of SMP Negeri 1 Juwana. The data were collected through tests, observations, field notes, and interviews and were analyzed by means of the qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. The results showed that: (1) the learning of report writing was better than that conducted before; (2) students’ writing skills at the end of Cycle II (9.03) were better (mean = 9.03) than those before the action (mean = 7.71). Therefore, it was concluded that the application of CTL was capable of improving the quality of the report writing learning and the report writing skills of Year VIII E students of SMP Negeri 1 Juwana.

Abstract: This study aims to describe lecturers’ and students’ perceptions of learning materials of the history of modern Indonesian literature with a gender perspective. Based on the perceptions, a conceptual model of a course book on the history of modern Indonesian literature with a gender perspective is designed. This study employed a development research design. The data were collected through interviews and a document study on information about characteristics of a course book on literature history with a gender perspective. The findings show that the lecturers’ and students’ perceptions of gender have not become a strong perspective in literature history learning. The books on literature history as learning references have not accommodated gender perspective issues. There is an opinion that female writers’ works do not belong to main works in the history of Indonesian literature.

Abstract: The first phase of this two-year study aims at describing the teachers’ awareness to include culture in the teaching and learning process, what cultural aspects are included in the English textbooks used in a number of schools in the Province of DIY and how the cultural elements are inserted in the books. The research data were obtained through a focus group discussion (FGD) attended by 20 English teachers from 5 regencies in the Province of DIY and from 7 English textbooks used by these teachers. The data from the FGD were analyzed using qualitative data analysis, while the books were discerned using content analysis. The results of the analyses show (1) the teachers have inserted cultural elements in their teaching and learning process, following the explicit and implicit modes of insertion used in the textbooks; (2) the cultural elements in the books consist of knowledge, behaviors, and artifacts; and (3) there are 409 western cultural elements and 739 Indonesian ones, but they are not followed by adequate explanations to anticipate confusion and misunderstanding.

The data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with informants. The findings are as follows. First, there are two forms of mahalabiu, i.e. (a) humorous stories and (b) short phrases or sentences. Second, the utterance of mahalabiu takes account of two aspects, i.e. (a) spatial, temporal, and situational settings, and (b) the speaker and listener. Third, mahalabiu is effective as a means of maintaining the Banjar language and as a medium of social criticism. The Banjar language in mahalabiu is not much influenced by other local languages or the Indonesian language in terms of the vocabulary and syntax.

Abstract: This study aims to explore the constestation of French writers’ ideologies during the era of World War II through their works. The primary data sources were “Le Mur”by Sartre, “L’Etranger” by Albert Camus, and “L’Attente de Dieu” Simone Weil. On the one hand the writers play roles as ones telling the world through their fiction, but on the other hand they have active roles in positioning their believed ideologies. The study employed the Critical Discourse Analysis method. The discourses emphasize that God is viewed as personal, social, historical experiences contested by Sartre, Camus, and Weil in their works. They discuss God using different perspectives. The findings show that God is philosophically positioned at the levels of being existent and non-existent, present and absent, and active and passive. Sartre and Camus are on the same line when talking about God’s absence in human existence. Meanwhile, Simone Weil, who is very religious, views that God is concretely present in human life.

It successfully developed a guide model for reading materials development based on multicultural education which was in the form of an e-learning package. The guide contains a set of rules and steps that teachers should understand and carry out in preparing and developing reading materials based on multicultural education and e-learning. The guide is in the form of an interactive CD and booklet. It has been tried out to product users and validated by experts and practitioners.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the types of arguments in written discourse by elementary school students The data sources were writing by elementary school students in the upper grades in Sungai Kunjang Samarinda The data were analyzed using a communication content analysis model The findings show that there are three types of arguments, ie opinion, proof, and conclusion The opinion argument is based on facts, interpretation, and evaluation The proving argument is based on an observation of an object and general knowledge The concluding argument is inductively and deductively made The use of opinion, proof, and conclusion as arguments in written discourse is related to the preliminary knowledge stored in every person’s long-term memory
