TL;DR: Body fluid 17-hydroxycorticosteroid determinations were utilized as an objective measurement of patient response to stress induced by the two oral surgery technics, indicating that, except for patient preference, neither procedure could be considered as the method of choice.
Abstract: Abstract : A clinical evaluation of the higher bur speed technic (air turbine) in the removal of impacted teeth was carried out on 100 mandibular third molar cases. Body fluid 17-hydroxycorticosteroid determinations were utilized as an objective measurement of patient response to stress induced by the two oral surgery technics. Findings indicated that, except for patient preference, neither procedure could be considered as the method of choice. The response of the patients to the two methods was virtually identical as indicated by both subjective and objective measurements. (Author)

TL;DR: Single doses of x and gamma rays were applied to the oral sues of rats in an attempt to confirm the previously observed bone-sparing effect of /sup 60/Co radiation, finding that Lingual mucosa of these animals showed no changes from the normal histological appearance from 2040 r administered by either 200-kv or /Sup 60/ Co radiation.
Abstract: Single doses of x and gamma rays were applied to the oral tis sues of rats in an attempt to confirm the previously observed bone-sparing effect of /sup 60/Co radiation. The doses used were 1020, 1530, and 2040 r with both kinds of radiation. The gingiva of 200-kv x-irradiated animals (2040 r) showed a decided pathologic condition. The epithelium was thin and atrophic, with degenerative alterations in the connective tissue and a decrease in vascularity. Ulceration and severe gingival inflammation, with the formation of gingival abscesses were noted in occasional animals. The gingiva in the /sup 60/Co-radiation group (2040 r) was essentiall the underlying connective tissue. Occasional animals exhibited considerable gingival inflammation, but abscess formntion was not observed. In the 200-kv x radiation animals (2040 r) the interdental septal bone showed granularity and irregularity in staining. Degenerative changes, including pyknosis, were noted in the osteocytes. Osteoid was absent and reduction in the number of osteoblasts was observed. The adjacent periodortal membrane showed a reduction in the number of fibroblasts, and a reduction in vascularity of connective tissue. The endosteal marrow spaces were increased. In the /sup 60/ Co radiation animals (2040 r) the bone was essentially normal, but occasional animalsmore » showed some reduction in the number of osteoblasts and fibroblasts in the adjacert periodontal membrane. Degenerative nuclear changes were infrequent. Lingual mucosa of these animals showed no changes from the normal histological appearance from 2040 r administered by either 200-kv or /sup 60/Co radiation. (BBB)« less
