TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present case studies of ways in which the experiential learning theory can be applied in university geography, and demonstrate how it can be used in the field of geography.
Abstract: Kolb's experiential learning theory is one of the best known educational theories in higher education. The theory presents a way of structuring a session or a whole course using a learning cycle. The different stages of the cycle are associated with distinct learning styles. Individuals differ in their preferred learning styles, and recognizing this is the first stage in raising students' awareness of the alternative approaches possible. This article presents some case studies of ways in which the theory can be applied in university geography.
TL;DR: A survey of 1,520 high schools that own GIS software, along with experiments and case studies in three high schools, provided primary data for assessing the implementation and effectiveness of GIS as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Geographic information systems (GIS) technology and methods have transformed decision-making in society by bringing geographic analysis to the desktop computer. Although some educators consider GIS to be a promising means for implementing reform, it has been adopted by less than 2 percent of American high schools. The reasons behind the interest in GIS, its slow implementation, and its effectiveness in teaching and learning are unclear. To address these concerns, this research describes the extent to which GIS is being implemented in American secondary education and assesses the effectiveness of lessons that use GIS. A survey of 1,520 high schools that own GIS software, along with experiments and case studies in three high schools, provided primary data for assessing the implementation and effectiveness of GIS.

TL;DR: A South Carolina-based lesson plan focused for seventh grade students that increases students' geographic awareness while also building critical thinking, analysis, and inquiry skills in support of various educational standards is presented in this article.
Abstract: The implementation of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) applications and discussion of GIScience-related themes are useful for teaching fundamental geographic and technological concepts. As one of the newest geographic information tools available on the World Wide Web, Google Earth has considerable potential to enhance methods for teaching geography and helping students develop other capabilities. Google Earth's utility as a teaching tool in precollegiate environments is illustrated through development of a South Carolina-based lesson plan focused for seventh grade students that increases students' geographic awareness while also building critical thinking, analysis, and inquiry skills in support of various educational standards.
