Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology Adoption Model for Entrepreneurs: Case of ChatGPT

[...]

Varun Gupta, Hongji Yang
05 Jan 2024-Internet Reference Services Quarterly
TL;DR: Generative AI Technology Adoption Model for Entrepreneurs: The model explores the factors influencing entrepreneurs' adoption of generative AI technology, highlighting the interplay between utilitarian and hedonic values.
Abstract: Abstract This article presents an extensive Generative AI Technology Adoption Model intended to elucidate the complex process that entrepreneurs and other innovation ecosystem actors, for instance, libraries, go through for its adoption. The model suggests that the adoption process happens in three stages: Pre-Perception & Perception, Assessment, and Outcome. During the Pre-Perception & Perception Phase, entrepreneurs initiate their technology exploration by navigating social factors, domain experience, technological familiarity, system quality, training and support, interaction convenience, and anthropomorphism; with utilitarian value and hedonic values playing an important role. As they transition to the Assessment Stage, perceived usefulness, ease of use, and a novel addition, perceived enjoyment, shape their evaluations, leading to generations of emotions toward it, with utilitarian value overweighting hedonic values. The model finishes with the Outcome Stage, where emotions developed in the Assessment Stage become tangible intentions to switch (use technology or switch to human services). The adoption model highlights the adoption factors (also called latent variables) and their relationships grounded on researcher’s professional experiences and need to be further empirically validated. Entrepreneurial implications highlight the strategic insights of the model, providing a decision-making roadmap and highlighting the interaction between utilitarian and hedonistic values. Entrepreneurs can create well-informed technological integrations that are in line with business objectives by using the incremental decision-making process. The model’s focus on comparative evaluations gives entrepreneurs the ability to strategically map the usability of technology for the best possible commercial results. The Generative AI Technology Adoption Model offers a nuanced understanding of entrepreneurs’ technology adoption processes, which is also applicable to other actors in the innovation ecosystem.

TL;DR: AI is a transformative tool in Philippine higher education, enhancing teaching, streamlining administrative tasks, and boosting research productivity. However, concerns exist about its potential impact on cheating, data fabrication, and creativity. Regulatory policies and ethical guidelines are needed to address these concerns.
Abstract: This column shows that Filipino instructors and administrators collectively acknowledge AI as a transformative tool with the potential to enhance teaching, streamline administrative tasks, and boost research productivity. They highlight AI's benefits in facilitating learning with specific examples, but recognize its limitations, particularly in contextualizing experiences. While they positively regard AI tools at work, they have some concerns such as cheating, data fabrication, and potential decline in creativity and critical thinking. Hence, they emphasize the necessity of regulatory policies and ethical guidelines governing AI use in higher education. They also report whether their home institutions have created AI policies. This column advocates for Philippine educational institutions to reassess their stance on AI's increasing presence.

Humor, Politics and the Global North: A Systematic Literature Review of Internet Memes

[...]

03 Apr 2024-Internet Reference Services Quarterly
TL;DR: This systematic literature review examines the role of internet memes in politics and sociocultural functions, highlighting gaps in research on economic functions, regional output, and conceptual clarity, with implications for media literacy and misinformation.
Abstract: Internet users commonly use the phrase "Internet meme" to refer to a diverse range of online content, such as jokes, gossip, and videos in online communication (Shifman, Citation2013). Internet memes play a crucial role in influencing public discussions and activism in the digital era. Studies reveal their potential for spreading false information (Wells, Citation2018), trigger sociopolitical activism (Nabea, Citation2021), encourage contemporary protest movements, public communication and serve several sociocultural functions of society (McGowan, Citation2016; Tammi & Rautio, Citation2022). Thus, conducting a systematic review of Internet memes can shed light on their role in political activism and various sociocultural functions of the digital society. The review can also help in identifying unexplored opportunities for promoting media literacy and investigating misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech. Therefore, a systematic review of Internet memes is conducted following Okoli's (Citation2015) framework. The findings highlight the research gap in terms of examining their economic functions, research design, and regional research output on Internet memes. The findings also highlight the need for general awareness and clarity about the concept of the Internet meme phenomenon and its different types.

Amplifying Value: Assessment of Asynchronous Embedded Library Instruction and the Influence of Faculty Endorsements

[...]

Caitlin Keenan, W. H. Meredith
31 Aug 2024-Internet Reference Services Quarterly
TL;DR: This study assesses the effectiveness of asynchronous embedded library instruction in research-intensive courses, finding moderate student knowledge gains and positive correlations between instructor encouragement and student engagement and learning.
Abstract: "Embedded" librarian programs can take many different forms. At Royal Roads University, librarians embed asynchronously in research-intensive courses via a hosted online forum. Over three to five days, the embedded librarian presents a series of posts on key information literacy topics and invites students' questions and comments. This research project undertook to investigate both the general effectiveness of this embedding approach (in terms of student learning and engagement) and the relationship that may exist between instructors' promotion of the forum and student engagement and/or learning. Quantitative data on student learning and engagement was collected through a pretest/post-test and qualitative data was collected from instructor comments within the LMS course shell. The results of this study indicate that embedding is moderately effective at increasing student knowledge, and that robust instructor encouragement of student participation correlates positively with both student engagement and student learning. We conclude that embedding is an effective information literacy instruction method that can be made more effective through increased relationship-building with faculty and program staff.

Abstract: While Grammarly is acknowledged for its role in error correction, writers stress the irreplaceable value of human editors in grasping narrative intricacies, contextual nuances, and stylistic preferences. Writers are also concerned about Grammarly potentially overshadowing personal style and voice. Writers' cautionary notes on occasional inaccuracies underscore the importance of critical human judgment in accepting Grammarly's recommendations. Emphasis is placed on prioritizing quality content delivery over perfection, with writers urged to maintain authenticity amidst technological assistance. The column advocates for using Grammarly and similar AI editing tools as aids to enhance the writing process rather than as substitutes for human discernment.
