TL;DR: The authors predicts a loss of hegemony for English, in favour of regional languages, and the future extinction of the least spoken minority languages, in a multilingual society, in which each language has its own, distinct social functions, even though there will be conflict between the languages that come into contact.
Abstract: The globalisation phenomenon that we are currently seeing has lead to major linguistic changes on a worldwide scale. English has become the leading international language, in economic and political spheres, and is becoming the language of high society and of the young. At the same time, however, regional languages are also making considerable headway, thanks to new social interaction and economic backing from their governments. In turn, and as a result of these two trends, there is impetus for feelings of belonging to local communities which see their language as a sign of their own authenticity, one that has to be defended against the phenomena of globalisation and regionalisation. We are thus heading towards a multilingual society, in which each language has its own, distinct social functions, even though it is inevitable that there will be conflict between the languages that come into contact. In this scenario, the author predicts a loss of hegemony for English, in favour of regional languages, and the future extinction of the least spoken minority languages.
TL;DR: This article outlines the main lines of research into the creation of automated summaries and its relationships with other areas of linguistic engineering.
Abstract: The coming of the WWW and of the Internet as a telecommunications network has changed the concept of what is considered information: the person who is best informed is not the one with the most information but the one with the best means for obtaining and assimilating (consuming) exactly the information acquired. This situation is proving to be a great stimulus for research into and the development of applications in the field of technology for recovering and extracting information. In this context, automated document summary systems are a new step forward towards optimising the treatment of documentation in digital formats and for tailoring it to the needs of users. This article outlines the main lines of research into the creation of automated summaries and its relationships with other areas of linguistic engineering.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a caracteritzacio del medi electronic com a fabrica de somnis, which permeten que molts usuaris facin un us d'Internet (forums, xats, MUD o correu electronic) com a taller d'experimentacio de relacions o d'identitats.
Abstract: Els fenomens socials sempre son complexos i per a comprendre'ls es requereixen diverses perspectives.

TL;DR: This paper made an important qualification that scholars in the humanities have long benefited from digitalization and computer technology, and nothing I say is intended to downplay the value of digital archives of secondary and primary sources.
Abstract: By way of preface to my observations about the humanities and distance learning, let me make an important qualification. Scholars in the humanities have long benefited from digitalization and computer technology, and nothing I say is intended to downplay the value of digital archives of secondary and primary sources. Humanists use digital data bases to locate articles on cuckoldry in Shakespeare’s late plays, they use digital text archives to gain access to variants of Browning’s The Ring and the Book, and they use email to communicate with scholars all over the world. In these ways, digitalization has enhanced research in the humanities, and I have no reason to doubt that this will continue to be the case.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a lista de tecnologias linguisticas, relativas al tratamiento tanto del habla como del texto escrito, and their papel in el contexto europeo actual.
TL;DR: The UOC's experience has been of great value to analyse several key issues such as the new ways of accessing quality education, the new way of participation, new values of educational processes as well as some of the structural factors on which e-learning is based, but which place its very model in jeopardy.
Abstract: In this article, I have tried to give answers to the question of what the risks and opportunities of virtual learning are. In this sense, the UOC's experience has been of great value to analyse several key issues such as the new ways of accessing quality education, the new ways of participation, the new values of educational processes as well as some of the structural factors on which e-learning is based, but which place its very model in jeopardy. Direct observation of some key processes as well as contact with the main actors (e.g. students, teachers and technicians) have provided valuable information about some factors to consider when analysing the social implications of virtual learning.

TL;DR: The opportunities offered by linguistic engineering for developing high quality products applicable in information society are described and a general model is proposed to deal with the different stages of data analysis, storage and access.
Abstract: The Internet is about communication and information. It is not simply a provider of data but also implies a real need for information. In other words, there is an growing necessity to cope with huge quantities of information, a large proportion of which is stored in text form. This article describes the opportunities offered by linguistic engineering for developing high quality products applicable in information society. A general model is proposed to deal with the different stages of data analysis, storage and access and an analysis is made with regard to the systems most widely used today. It is not an exhaustive list of possibilities and solutions. Nor is it completely up-to-the-minute, or is it intended to be. Technology is developing at great speed and any attempt to cover a particular field is already outdated by the time it is published. Rather, the author wishes to provide a perspective on the main current developments and attempts to stir the reader's interest in the present and the future of linguistic engineering.
TL;DR: The issue of how complex information processing (cognition) is coupled to human cognition, or alternatively, whether a de-coupling is possible, and even underway is explored, and it is concluded that abstract information has indeed a character of intangibility.
Abstract: What is explored here is the issue of how complex information processing (cognition) is coupled to human cognition, or alternatively, whether a de-coupling is possible, and even underway. Starting with the view that cognition need not necessarily be based in the individual person (or computer), we look at the tangibility of information in processing and conclude that abstract information has indeed a character of intangibility. Looking at realms of being, we see that the digital virtual realm, evolving out of the physical and mental realms, opens up great possibilities for a wider scope of information interactions. The informational realm brings in non-human information interactions, i.e. information processing taking place within and between information artifacts themselves. This possibility leads to reconsidering the nature of cognition itself, with the potential for virtual processing in an intangible information world.
