TL;DR: The long-term exposure to fluorine of high dose could produce toxicity effect on male reproductive system and the pathological alterations of testes were observed.
Abstract: Objective To study the effects of excessive fluorine on reproductive system of male ratsMethods Sodium fluoride was administered to male rats with drinking water (150 mg/L) for 10 weeks The sperm count, the rates of sperm mobility and aberration, the levels of biochemical marker enzyme of testis and epididymidis, as well as the levels of gonadal hormone in serum, were examined And the pathological alterations of testes were observedResults Contrasted with control rats, the sperm count, the rate of sperm mobility, as well as the levels of serum testosterone (T) and luteinizing hormone (LH), were suppressed by fluoride While the rate of sperm aberration was elevated The differences between two groups were significant ( P 005) The pathological alterations of testes were observedConclusions The long-term exposure to fluorine of high dose could produce toxicity effect on male reproductive system

TL;DR: The abnormalities of structure, confor-mation and function of the mitochondrial membrane might be the source of themetabolic disorder of the energy and/or the occurrence of necrosis in myocardium of Patients with Keshan disease.
Abstract: Keshan disease (KD) is an endemic cardiomyopathy with membrane damage inmyocardial mitochondria. We have obtained a result through feeding guinea pIgs adiet collected from KD endemic area with imitation of the living comditionsof inhabitants in the area.Selenium (Se) contet and glutathione peroxidase acti-vity in blood and tissues was decreaseb in mitochondria, microsome and superna-tant of myocardium. The activity of glutathone-s-transferase was also decreasedto some extent,Therefore, the content of lipid peroxide and hydroperoxide increa-sed.Meantime the activity of cytochrome oxidase (CCO),an enzyme binding withmitochondrial membrane, and the cardiolipin in membrane lipids decreased. There fure oxidative damage in the membrane and disorders of the membrane function appe-ared.Added the cardiolipin to purified CCO solution in the reconstruction test,CCO activity increased significantly.Hence the abnormalities of structure,confor-mation and function of the mitochondrial membrane might be the source of themetabolic disorder of the energy and/or the occurrence of necrosis in myocardiumof te Patients with Keshan disease.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the local government should take integrated controlling actions such as closing down the coal pits of high amount of arsenic with established time limit based on health education and promotion, encouraging the residents to stop mining the high arsenic coal and using the improved stoves.
Abstract: Endemic regions of Guizhou Province with arseniasis caused by domestic coal burning are distributed in Xingren, Anlong, Xingyi and Zhijin Counties. 9 Towns and 32 Villages are implicated, and the population of direct exposure is about 40 thousand. There are 8 786 households and 2 848 cases with arseniasis. The epidemiology is characterized by that the endemic is influenced by many factors, such as indoor exposure levels to arsenic, concentrations of arsenic in the coal, quantity and time of coal usage, ventilation of the room, the ways of dehydration and storage of the foodstuff. Arsenic is ingested through alimentary and respiratory tract as well as the skin. It occurs mainly in winter with sub-acute symptoms. Cirrhosis of liver and ascites are the two main causes of death. Multiple pollution by chemicals such as arsenic, fluoride and sulfur dioxide exists due to coal burning. Countermeasures have been done since then, but the endemic has not been effectively controlled. It is suggested that, in order to entirely control the endemic as soon as possible, the local government should take integrated controlling actions such as closing down the coal pits of high amount of arsenic with established time limit based on health education and promotion, encouraging the residents to stop mining the high arsenic coal and using the improved stoves.

TL;DR: The endemic areas are have shrunk, the disease situation is improved and remarkable progress has been made in controlling fluorosis, however, the situations in some endemic Areas are still serious and new endemic areas have appeared, so it was important to strengthen the defluoridizing measures mostly aiming at oven improvement.
Abstract: Objective To investigate the current situation of endemic fluorosis related to air pollution caused by burning coal in Chongqing and to evaluate the effectiveness of countermeasures against fluorosis. Methods Dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis Ⅲ° were investigated among children aged 8 to 12 in 13 counties. Urine fluoride content of children sampled from each age group was detected. Fluoride content of corn and pepper was detected in fluorosis endemic areas. The oven improvement and diet were investigated. At the same time the dental fluorosis of children, fluoride content of urine, corn and pepper, oven improvement were investigated in non-endemic areas by sampling as control. Results 74795 children were investigated in 626 villages in endemic areas. The detected rate of dental fluorosis was 45.86% and the fraying rate was 7.09%. 222 cases of skeletal fluorosis Ⅲ° were diagnosed in 4 counties. The median of urine fluoride content was 0.89 mg/L and it was higher than 1 mg/L in 5 counties. The median of fluoride content in corn and pepper was 1.70 mg/kg and 9.20 mg/kg respectively; the detected rate of oven improvement was 68.85% and the rate of proper oven using was 70.00%. The rice was the major diet for local residents. 206 villages reached the criterion of controlled endemic area. The detected rate of dental fluorosis was more than 30% in 12 villages in non-endemic area. Conclusions The endemic areas are have shrunk, the disease situation is improved. Remarkable progress has been made in controlling fluorosis. However, the situations in some endemic areas are still serious and new endemic areas have appeared. So it was important to strengthen the defluoridizing measures mostly aiming at oven improvement.
