Abstract: This study examined the association of appointment nonadherence to markers of disease severity using one year of demographic and health information on 995 individuals with HIV in primary care at an urban community health centre. At the latest visit, 106 of 946 valid cases (11.2%) had a CD4 less than or equal to 200, and 454 of 936 valid cases (48.5%) had detectable plasma HIV RNA (greater than 50 copies/ml). Using logistic regression, appointment nonadherence (number of missed appointments) was a significant predictor (p<.03) of having an AIDS-defining CD4 count over and above the effects of number of kept appointments (p<.0001), and whether or not the patient was taking HAART (p<.002). Abstract: [1] Observations of likely fluvial channels on the surface of Titan, along with Titan's geologically youthful surface, motivate this study of comparative fluvial erosion rates on Titan and the Earth. The roles of bedload abrasion, suspended load abrasion, plucking, and cavitation are considered. Despite orders of magnitude differences in some of the physical parameters that control fluvial incision on Titan and the Earth, incision rates on Titan are likely to be similar to terrestrial rates, given similar conditions of slope, discharge, and sediment supply.

Abstract: The optical transition probability of Nd3+ (0.5 mol%) doped lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) is investigated. The absolute intensities of its forced electric dipole transitions between 400 nm and 1000 nm were measured, from which we obtain three phenomenological parameters, Ω2 = 0.787×10−20 cm2, Ω4 = 1.182×10−20 cm2, and Ω6 = 1.042×10−20 cm2, according to the Judd–Ofelt theory. The radiation lifetime (346.9 μs) of the 4F3/2 metastable state, the stimulated emission cross-section σij (2.49×10−21 cm2, 6.51×10−21 cm2, 2.17×10−21 cm2) and the fluorescence branch ratios are calculated. We also measured the fluorescence lifetime (155.84 μs) and calculated the quantum efficiency (46.1%). The analysis reveals that Nd3+-doped PLZT, based on its large electro-optical effect, has potential applications in active optical devices.

Abstract: The emission from low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) arises from the accretion of mass onto a neutron star or black hole. A knowledge of the amount of mass being accreted as well as changes in this value are therefore essential inputs into models of these systems. Despite the need for this information, we currently lack an easily applied method that allows the accretion rate to be measured. X-ray color-color plots and UV observations can be used for this purpose, but these methods require access to oversubscribed satellites. Even if time is granted on these facilities, there is no guarantee that the source will be in a desired state when the observations take place. In this paper we show that an estimate of the ratio of the mass accretion rate to the Eddington rate can be obtained for Sco X-1 by using the Johnson B magnitude. Based on correlated X-ray and ground-based observations, we find that for Sco X-1, /E = -(0.123 ± 0.007)B + 2.543 ± 0.085. This relation is valid when the system is on its normal and lower flaring branches. Based on theoretical models, we suggest that similar relations should also exist for other LMXBs.
