Abstract: In a computer implemented method of researching textual data sources, textual data is reduced to a plurality of distinctive words based on frequency of usage within the textual data. The distinctive words are converted into first numeric representations of vectors containing random numbers. A first self-organizing map is formed from the first numeric representations and organized by similarities between the vectors. A second self-organizing map is formed from second numeric representations generated from the organization of the first self-organizing map. The second numeric representations are vectors derived from the first self-organizing map. The vectors are used to train the second self-organizing map. The vectors derived from the first self-organizing map are organized into clusters of similarities between the vectors on the second self-organizing map. Dialectic arguments are formed from the second self-organizing map to interpret the textual data.

Abstract: We manually mapped particles ranging in longest axis from 0.3 cm to 95 m on (101955) Bennu for the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) asteroid sample return mission. This enabled the mission to identify candidate sample collection sites and shed light on the processes that have shaped the surface of this rubble-pile asteroid. Building on a global survey of particles, we used higher-resolution data from regional observations to calculate particle size-frequency distributions (PSFDs) and assess the viability of four candidate sites for sample collection (presence of unobstructed particles ≤ 2 cm). The four candidate sites have common characteristics: each is situated within a crater with a relative abundance of sampleable material. Their PSFDs, however, indicate that each site has experienced different geologic processing. The PSFD power-law slopes range from −3.0 ± 0.2 to −2.3 ± 0.1 across the four sites, based on images with a 0.01-m pixel scale. These values are consistent with, or shallower than, the global survey measurements. At one site, Osprey, the particle packing density appears to reach geometric saturation. We evaluate the uncertainty in these measurements and discuss their implications for other remotely sensed and mapped particles, and their importance to OSIRIS-REx sampling operations.

Abstract: An active imaging system uses communication satellites to identify the location and physical attributes of a target. A transmitter emits a time-synchronized signal directed to a target. The transmitter radiates L-band RF signals. The transmitter can be positioned on an airborne or ground platform. A constellation of communication satellites receives and time stamps the time-synchronized signal reflected from the target to form an active image of the target. The constellation of communication satellites have multiple roles other than active imaging, such as providing voice and data communications. The time-synchronized signal reflected from the target can be received by multiple satellites within the constellation of communication satellites or by multiple antenna disposed on one satellite within the constellation of communication satellites.

Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system and method for using modified Latent Semantic Analysis techniques to structure data for efficient search and display. The present invention creates a hierarchy of clustered documents, representing the topics of a domain corpus, through a process of optimal agglomerative clustering. The output from a search query is displayed in a fisheye view corresponding to the hierarchy of clustered documents. The fisheye view may link to a two-dimensional self-organizing map that represents semantic relationships between documents.
