Abstract: The use of high-speed multimedia technologies such as MPEG-based interactive Videoconferencing and IPTV for delivering Television content over the Internet is becoming increasingly common. With commercial vendors and content providers envisioning products and services for delivering audiovisual content equipped with greater user-control and higher resolutions, there has a risen a significant demand to identify and quantify various bottlenecks in the Internet to better support such ventures. In this pape r, we attempt to develop an analytical model that reflects the effects of various device factors and network factors that affect the performa nce of high- speed interactive audiovisual streams, i.e. the ultimate end-user perception of audiovisual quality. To develop our model, we use a set of experimental results obtained in both a LAN as well as on an Internet testbed.

Abstract: As one of the first worldwide initiatives provisioning ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) services entirely based on renewable energy such as solar, wind and hydroelectricity across Canada and around the world, the GreenStar Network (GSN) is developed to dynamically transport user services to be processed in data centers built in proximity to green energy sources, reducing GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions of ICT equipments. Regarding the current approach, which focuses mainly in reducing energy consumption at the micro-level through energy efficiency improvements, the overall energy consumption will eventually increase due to the growing demand from new services and users, resulting in an increase in GHG emissions. Based on the cooperation between Mantychore FP7 and the GSN, our approach is, therefore, much broader and more appropriate because it focuses on GHG emission reductions at the macro-level. Whilst energy efficiency techniques are still encouraged at low-end client equipments, the heaviest computing services are dedicated to virtual data centers powered completely by green energy from a large abundant reserve of natural resources, particularly in northern countries.

Abstract: One great challenge of modern networks is how to select paths and react to highly variable and demanding traffic patterns. In recent years, emerging networking languages and architectures, such as P4/PISA, have created unprecedented opportunities for rapidly prototyping disruptive solutions in programmable data planes. In this direction, source routing (SR) is a prominent alternative to conventional table-based routing, since it reduces the convergence time of building distributed routing tables. In particular, PolKA explores the polynomial residue number system (RNS) for a fully stateless SR, i.e., no state update on packet headers needs to be conveyed along the route. This paper reports the deployment of PolKA in a continental testbed composed of P4 programmable switches. Results for end-to-end throughput and forwarding latency show that PolKA matches the data plane performance of traditional approaches, while paving the way for further innovative applications by exploring RNS properties in dynamic scenarios.
