Abstract: A method and an apparatus for checking the authenticity of documents, such as banknotes or credit-cards. The documents comprise a number of randomly distributed conductive fibres of which the distribution is scanned by microwaves and the response is transformed into a digital coded signal. A digital mark on the document, which is representative for the distribution of an individual document, is read off, transcoded, and compared with said coded signal for producing an approval signal. The use of a microwave scanning system in conjunction with documents having a random distribution of suitable fibres ensures a great repetitivity and security of the system.

Abstract: The present invention relates to articles, particularly plate or sheet-like articles made of plastic in which very low contents of fine electrically conductive fibers are uniformly dispersed so as to make the articles conductive. It also relates to specific intermediate plastic products, referred to as grains, threads and granules, and the processes for manufacturing each of these products as well as the final conductive articles. The articles can be used as a suitable shielding against radio-frequency and high-frequency electromagnetic radiation or as antistatic plastic articles.

Abstract: The invention relates to fluorine-doped coatings which include a diamond-like composition containing carbon, silicon, oxygen, hydrogen, and fluorine on various substrates. Preferred substrates include flexible substrates, precision-edged substrates, and electrosurgical instruments. The present invention also relates to a method of making a substrate coated with a fluorine-doped diamond-like coating which includes positioning the substrate in a vacuum coating chamber and depositing a diamond-like composition containing carbon, silicon, oxygen, hydrogen, and fluorine onto the substrate by co-deposition of clusterless particle beams comprised of ions, atoms, or radicals of the carbon, silicon, oxygen, hydrogen, and fluorine, the mean free path of each particle species being in excess of the distance between its source and the growing particle coating surface of the substrate.

Abstract: An energy absorbing element such as a spring, shock absorber or vibration damper in the form of a laminated structure comprising at least one rigid non-elastomeric layer such as a reinforced plastic material bonded to a visco-elastic layer such as a vulcanizable elastomer in which twisted fiber bundles are embedded in the visco-elastic layer. Preferably the twisted fiber bundle comprises a steel cord having an elongation at rupture between 1.5 and 8%. An anchoring layer between the visco-elastic layer and the non-elastomeric layer may be employed.
