Prediction of the surface temperature in friction braking systems is the main problem in the analysis of thermal dissipation and surface degradations such as wear, phase transformation, cracks, etc. The first difficulty of the thermal prediction is presented by the complex interactions between the thermal, mechanical and tribological behaviour. The second problem is due to the multiscale aspect, from the macroscopic response of the disc and brake pads (conduction, distortions, etc.) to local surface effects (surface roughness, wear debris, phase changes, etc.). This paper aims to propose a macrostructural model of the thermomechanical behaviour of the disc brake, taking into account the real three-dimensional geometry of the disc–pad couple. Contact surface variations, distortions and wear are taken into account. Real body geometry and thermoelastoplastic modelling of the disc material are specially introduced. Such a model aims to give predictions of the thermal gradients varying with time and of the thermomechanical response of the components. Predictions of the temperature distributions are compared with experimental measurements obtained by thermographs and thermocouples. Such a model seems to be a suitable base for the study of the thermal dissipation and the thermomechanical behaviour and for the introduction of local friction effects. read more read less

Railway track stiffness is an important track property which can help with the identification of maintenance related problems. Railway track stiffness can currently be measured using stationary equipment or specialised low-speed vehicles. The concept of using trains in regular service to measure track stiffness has the potential to provide inexpensive daily ‘drive-by’ track monitoring to complement data collected by less-frequent monitoring techniques. A method is proposed in this paper for the detection of track stiffness variation through an analysis of vehicle accelerations resulting from the vehicle–track dynamic interaction. The cross-entropy optimisation technique is applied to determine the track stiffness profile, which generates a vehicle response that best fits the measured vertical accelerations of a railway carriage bogie.Numerical validation of the concept is achieved by using a two-dimensional half-bogie dynamic model, representing a railway vehicle, to infer a global track stiffness profile... read more read less

One of the major considerations in digital transformation of any industry including the railway is the increased exposure to cyberattacks. The railway industry is vulnerable to these attacks because since the number of digital items and also number of interfaces between digital and physical components in the railway systems keep increasing. Increased number of items and interfaces require new frameworks, concepts and architectures to ensure the railway system’s resilience with respect to cybersecurity challenges, such as lack of proactiveness, lack of holistic perspective and obsolescence of safety systems exposed to current and future cyber threats landscape. To this date, there are several works carried out in the literature that studied the cybersecurity aspects and its application on railway infrastructure. However, to develop and implement an appropriate roadmap to cybersecurity in railways, there is a need of describing emerging challenges, and approaches to deal with these challenges and the possibilities and benefits of these. Hence, the objective of this paper is to provide a systematic review and outline cybersecurity emerging trends and approaches, and also to identify possible solutions by querying literature, academic and industrial, for future directions. The authors of this paper conducted separate searches through four popular databases, that is, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science and IEEE explore. For the screening process, authors have used keywords with Boolean operators and database filters and identified 90 articles most relevant to the study domain. The analysis of 90 articles shows that majority of the cybersecurity studies lies within the railways are conceptual and lags in application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based security. Like other industries, it is very important that railways should also follow latest security technologies, trends and train their workforce for cyber hygiene since railways are already in digitalization transition mode. read more read less

Nonlinear effects of a new mesh-type rail pad on the coupled vehicle-slab track dynamics system under extremely cold environment

Nonlinear dynamic behavior of a new mesh-type rail pad on the vehicle-slab track coupled system is investigated considering the influences of frequency and amplitude dependence in extremely cold environment. The frequency dependence of the new mesh-type rail pad is modeled by a fractional derivative viscoelastic element while a frictional component considers the amplitude dependence. Laboratory tests are performed to investigate the frequency and amplitude dependent performance of the rail pad and to determine key model parameters. Temperature factor and Mooney-Rivlin strain energy density are also introduced to simulate the mechanical properties of the rubber material of rail pad in low temperature environments. Further, the proposed nonlinear model for the rail pad is implemented in a coupled vehicle-slab track dynamics model to investigate the complicated nonlinear effects of the rail pad due to the dependence of the temperature, amplitude and frequency. The analysis indicates that the dynamic stiffness and damping of the mesh-type rail pads increase with the frequency increases. The proposed model for the mesh-type rail pad enables a more accurate dynamic simulation of vehicle-slab track system in extremely cold environment than the traditional Kelvin-Voigt model which overestimates the wheel rail force, rail vibration acceleration and other indicators at 3.15 Hz–40 Hz and 250 Hz–500 Hz, while underestimates these indicators at 50 Hz–125 Hz. read more read less

Optimization of rail profile design for high-speed lines based on Gaussian function correction method

Abstract:

As high-speed trains operate at a higher speed, the problem of rail wear is more serious. In this paper, a new Gaussian function correction (GFC) method is proposed to design the new rail profile, two parameters are introduced to control the removal area. Then a high-speed train vehicle dynamic model is established, the Kriging surrogate model (KSM) is used to reduce the number of simulations and the Non dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) algorithm is used to optimize the rail profile. Finally, the dynamic characteristics and wheel/rail wear evolution of the optimized profile are analyzed. The results show that the dynamic performance of the optimized rail profile has been improved. The maximum wear depth of the optimized rail profile is reduced by 15.63% when passing a total weight of 16 Mt. The wheel wear depth of S1002CN profile contact with CHN60OPT is reduced by 4.8%. The proposed GFC method can quickly generate a new rail profile and has good engineering significance for rail grinding. The GFC-KSM-NSGA- II method can be used to optimize the rail profiles for high-speed lines, and it can further guide the operation and maintenance. read more read less
