Cooling degree-hours (CDH) received the broadest application in evaluation of the ambient air cooling efficiency in power engineering (engine intake air cooling systems) and air conditioning. The current CDH numbers are defined as a drop in air temperature multiplied by associated time duration of performance and their summarized annual number is used to estimate the annual effect achieved due to sucked air cooling in power plants based on combustion engines (fuel saving, power output increment) and in air conditioning (refrigeration energy generation according to needs). A majority of approaches to designing ambient air cooling systems is proceeding from the cooling capacity of the chillers selected to provide a maximum current or annual CDH number with corresponding maximum current or annual effect (additional energy produced or fuel consumption reduction) in site climate location. But such approaches lead to inevitable oversizing the chillers and cooling systems in the whole. The analysis of intake air cooling efficiency in site varying climatic conditions, accompanied by quite a simple numerical simulation, enabled to reveal the potential of its enhancement and evaluate numerically the results of each step of designing in logical sequence. The new approaches to cooling system rational designing were introduced, that enables to synthesize and substantiate innovative principal decisions to exclude unproductive waste of installed (design) cooling capacity in actual operation. The innovative findings of methodological approaches include the use of the rate of annual CDH number increment as an indicator for selecting the optimum and rational values of design cooling capacity. The optimum cooling capacity corresponds to maximum rate of summarized annual CDH increment and maximum level of thermal loading accordingly, which provides minimum sizes of the chiller. In reality, it is a minimum permissible value of cooling capacity of the chiller installed and the overall ambient air cooling system. The rational cooling capacity, that enables to achieve practically maximum value of annual CDH and avoid chiller oversizing, is determined as the second, local, maximum of the rate in the summarized annual CDH over the range above the first one, global, maximum. A rational design cooling capacity determined by applying the novel methodology allows to decrease the ambient air cooling system sizes by 15 to 20% compared with traditional designing issuing from the peaked thermal load during a year. With this practically a maximum annual effect in fuel saving (energy generation or others) can be achieved too. read more read less

A variable compression ratio concept that can give a different expansion ratio to the compression ratio has been evaluated by means of a simulation of a turbocharged diesel engine. The compression ratio is controlled by varying the ratio of the connecting rod length to the crank throw, hence the name variable crank radius/connecting rod length engine (VR/LE). The VR/LE mechanism kinematics have been defined and described, and the compression ratio and expansion ratio have been presented as a function of the eccentric phase angle (αo). A zero-dimensional engine simulation that has been the subject of comprehensive validation has been used as the basis of the VR/LE study. The effect of the compression ratio on the engine performance at fixed loads is presented. The principal benefits are a reduction in fuel consumption at part load of about 2 per cent and a reduction in ignition delay that leads to an estimated 6 dB reduction in combustion noise. The study has been conducted within the assumption of a maxim... read more read less

Abstract:

In the present study, a thermo-hydraulic performance (THP) of solar air heater (SAH) has been assessed by placing sine wave-shaped baffles on the heat-absorbing surface. In the present study, a thermo-hydraulic performance (THP) of solar air heater (SAH) has been assessed by placing sine wave-shaped baffles on the heat-absorbing surface. The experiments have been performed by varying Reynolds number ( R e ) ranging from 3000-18,000, relative pitch ( P s t / e ) ranging from 8 to 14, relative height ( e / H ) ranging from 0.4 to 0.55, relative baffle length ( L b / L P ) ranging from 0.054 to 0.081 and angle of attack(α) ranging from 10° to 45° while the duct aspect ratio has been kept fixed at 12. The best set of geometric parameters has been decided based on Nusselt number ( N u b ) and friction factor ( f b ) characteristics of the roughened SAH and compared with the smooth surface SAH, under analogous experimentation conditions. The cost analysis has also been performed and results revels that roughened SAH is more cost-effective than smooth SAH. The correlation for Nusselt number ( N u b ) , friction factor ( f b ) , and thermo-hydraulic performance parameters (η) have been developed using regression analysis and found an average deviation of ±9.15%, ±7%, and ±9.2% respectively, from experimental results. read more read less

Fault diagnosis of wind turbine based on multi-signal CNN-GRU model

However, most of the current fault diagnosis methods only use single sensor signal as the input of DL model, which leads to the limitation of the model performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-signal CNN-GRU model. Firstly, the acquired multiple sensor signals are converted to time–frequency images by Multi-Synchrosqueezing S-Transform, the frequency domain features of multiple sensors are extracted by Convolutional Neural Network and fused by Attention Mechanism, then the multi-source time-frequency features are extracted by Gated Recurrent Unit and finally classified by SoftMax. Experiments are conducted on the CWRU dataset and the field gearbox dataset. The results show that the proposed method achieves an average accuracy of 99.69% and 100% on the two datasets, which are both higher than existing DL-based fault diagnosis methods. The proposed method can effectively fuse signals from multiple sensors, thus improving the classification accuracy and stability of the model, which has high practicality and reliability for fault diagnosis of wind turbines. read more read less

Effect of split injection strategies on diverse characteristics of a common rail direct injection diesel engine operating with diesel-palm oil-ethanol micro-emulsions
D.H. Qi, Kai Li, Chenxi Zhang, Tao Wang

Abstract:

This study investigated the effect of pilot injection timing (PIT) and pilot injection quantity (PIQ) on the performance of a common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engine with two-stage injection system operating with diesel-palm oil-ethanol micro-emulsions. This study investigated the effect of pilot injection timing (PIT) and pilot injection quantity (PIQ) on the performance of a common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engine with two-stage injection system operating with diesel-palm oil-ethanol micro-emulsions. The results indicated that, at low engine load, the maximum in-cylinder pressure (Pmax) and peak of heat release rate (HRR) of D35P35E30 were highest, and those of D100 were lowest. At high engine load, the Pmax of D100 was highest, that of D60P30E10 was lowest, and the peaks of HRR were almost identical for all test fuels. The Pmax and peak of HRR were slightly increased with the advance of PIT. Increasing PIQ increased the first peak of HRR and reduced the second one. At low engine load, the coefficient of variation (COV) of Pmax and the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) presented a slight decrease for the micro-emulsions, but did for D100 at high engine loads. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of the micro-emulsions was higher, and the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) was also slightly higher when compared with diesel (D100). With the advance of PIT and the increase of PIQ, BSFC was increased, BTE was decreased, and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were reduced. The variation of PIT and PIQ had little effect on the particle number concentration (PNC), but had evident effect on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. It was concluded that the micro-emulsions can be used to reduce NOx and particulate matter (PM) simultaneously combined with injection strategy in a diesel engine. read more read less
