Abstract: We study the algebraic connectivity in relation to the graph's robustness to node and link failures. Graph's robustness is quantified with the node and the link connectivity, two topological metrics that give the number of nodes and links that have to be removed in order to disconnect a graph. The algebraic connectivity, i.e. the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix, is a spectral property of a graph, which is an important parameter in the analysis of various robustness-related problems. In this paper we study the relationship between the proposed metrics in three well-known complex network models: the random graph of Erdos-Renyi, the small-world graph of Watts-Strogatz and the scale-free graph of Barabasi-Albert. From (Fielder, 1973) it is known that the algebraic connectivity is a lower bound on both the node and the link connectivity. Through extensive simulations with the three complex network models, we show that the algebraic connectivity is not trivially connected to graph's robustness to node and link failures. Furthermore, we show that the tightness of this lower bound is very dependent on the considered complex network model.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the localization problem in large-scale under-water sensor networks. The adverse aqueous environments, the node mobility, and the large network scale all pose new challenges, and most current localization schemes are not applicable. We propose a hierarchical approach which divides the whole localization process into two sub-processes: anchor node localization and ordinary node localization. Many existing techniques can be used in the former. For the ordinary node localization process, we propose a distributed localization scheme which novelly integrates a 3-dimensional Euclidean distance estimation method with a recursive location estimation method. Simulation results show that our proposed solution can achieve high localization coverage with relatively small localization error and low communication overhead in large-scale 3-dimensional underwater sensor networks.

Abstract: The accurate prediction of quality from an end-user perspective has received increased attention with the growing demand for compression and communication of digital image and video services over wired and wireless networks. The existing quality assessment methods and metrics have a vast reach from computational and memory efficient numerical methods to highly complex models incorporating aspects of the human visual system. It is hence crucial to classify these methods in order to find the favorable approach for an intended application. In this paper a survey and classification of contemporary image and video quality metrics is therefore presented along with the favorable quality assessment methodologies. Emphasis is given to those metrics that can be related to the quality as perceived by the end-user. As such, these perceptual-based image and video quality metrics may build a bridge between the assessment of quality as experienced by the end-user and the quality of service parameters that are usually deployed to quantify service integrity.

Abstract: In this paper we present the architectural implications of flow-aware networking, or FAN, a new approach for realizing QoS guarantees. FAN performs traffic control based on user-defined flows using implicit admission control and per-flow scheduling. This allows adequate performance guarantees for streaming and elastic flows without requiring class of service distinction or relying on signalled traffic specifications. We argue that FAN is a new direction for Internet quality of service that is arguably necessary as an alternative to flawed classical architectures and sufficient to meet user performance requirements in a cost-effective way.

Abstract: Although an autonomous mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is useful in many scenarios, a MANET connected to the Internet is more desirable. This interconnection is achieved by using gateways, which act as bridges between a MANET and the Internet. Before a mobile node can communicate with an Internet host it needs to find a route to a gateway. Thus, a gateway discovery mechanism is required. In this paper the MANET routing protocol Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) is extended to achieve the interconnection between a MANET and the Internet. Moreover, the paper investigates and compares three approaches for gateway discovery. The question of whether the configuration phase with the gateway should be initiated by the gateway, by the mobile node or by mixing these two approaches is being discussed. We have implemented and simulated these three methods and we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the three alternatives.
