Summary vs synthesis: the difference that matters most
A strong literature review synthesizes rather than summarizes. Summarizing lists what each paper said, one after another. Synthesis groups studies by theme, method, or argument — showing where the field agrees, disagrees, and leaves gaps.
Rewriting a sentence changes how a claim is expressed, not what the claim is or how it relates to the rest of the field. A paraphrased literature review is still a literature review of whatever structure you gave it. Synthesis has to happen at the level of the sources: which studies used which methods, where findings diverge, what nobody has tested. SciSpace works there — extraction across papers into comparison tables so patterns become visible, then a cited draft.
Value for money
QuillBot is cheaper on annual billing, and its free tier is more useful than most. At $8.33 a month annualised it undercuts SciSpace, and for someone whose need is rewriting and grammar it delivers that fully. SciSpace’s price covers literature search, PDF reading, cross-paper extraction, systematic reviews and source-grounded writing, none of which QuillBot offers at any tier. Pick on the job you need, not the headline number.
