Both tools help you find papers, and both draw on overlapping open metadata sources, so the same study will usually be reachable in either. Both export into reference managers. Past that, they do different jobs.
Litmaps documents 270M+ articles drawn from Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex and Crossref, and SciSpace searches across Google Scholar, PubMed, ArXiv and other databases.
Seeing a field as a network of clusters, bridges and outliers is a genuinely different way of understanding it, as Litmaps provides. It also watches your map and tells you when new papers land in that research area.
But Litmaps does not not tell you what the papers in the network found. Summary vs synthesis: the difference that matters most
A strong literature review synthesizes rather than summarizes. Summarizing lists what each paper said, one after another. Synthesis groups studies by theme, method, or argument — showing where the field agrees, disagrees, and leaves gaps.
The two tools help at different points on that path. Litmaps gets you to a structural view of the field. But a citation map shows relationships between papers, not claims within them; the map cannot tell you that two clusters disagree about a mechanism. SciSpace works on the claims: cited answers, PDF chat to interrogate a specific study, and extraction into comparison tables so patterns across methods and findings become visible, then a cited draft in the same workspace.
Value for money
