Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were filled into polycarbonate (PC) by large scale extruder, and some studies were carried out on as-produced composite. The results showed PC composite containing 1 wt.% of MWCNTs had a tensile strength 4.5% higher than neat PC, and the elastic modulus of PC/MWCNTs composite increased obviously with MWCNTs loadings. The electrical resistivity measurements indicated a percolation of MWCNTs near 5 wt.% (3.4 vol.%) for the composite. Either the decrease in the fluidity of the composite melts with the increase of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loadings or the unexpected shortening of CNTs in extrusion was supposed to have weakened the effects of CNTs as a reinforcing agent or a conductive filler.

Study on polycarbonate/multi-walled carbon nanotubes composite produced by melt processing

A Mg–11Gd–4.5Y–1.5Zn–1Nd–0.5Zr alloy with high-strength and heat-resistance has successfully been prepared by hot extrusion and subsequent ageing. It exhibits an ultimate tensile strength of 473 MPa, 0.2% proof stress of 373 MPa and elongation to failure of 4.1% at room temperature. At 250 °C, this alloy shows an ultimate tensile strength of 369 MPa, 0.2% proof stress of 316 MPa and elongation to failure of 6.3%. Its good mechanical properties and thermal stability are attributed to the dispersion of large volume fraction of 14H-LPSO phase, small α-Mg grains, basal-fiber texture and dense distribution of precipitates at the grain boundaries and inside the grains.

Preparation and characterization of cnts–tio2 composites

Polycarbonate composites containing carbon nanotubes can be prepared through a method combined solution mixing and precipitation together. The surface chemical state of the purified carbon nanotubes was studied through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the state of carbon nanotubes in the composites through transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that some polar functional groups such as C O, C O and O C O were present on the surface of the purified carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanotubes coated with polycarbonate layers were well dispersed through the polycarbonate matrix. Ultrasound is supposed to play an important role in the uniform dispersion of carbon nanotubes into the polycarbonate solution and the formation of the composites. The preparing method is regarded as an easy way of producing polymer based nanocomposites on a large scale.
