A dual-band multipolarized aperture-shared antenna array is presented, achieving Ku-band dual linearly polarized (LP) operation and Ka-band dual circularly polarized (CP) operation. Its dual-band aperture-shared structure is fed by two groups of independent feed networks, from the side and the bottom, using the quasi-planar coaxial waveguide line (QCWL) and the hollow-waveguide (HW) feed structure, respectively. The Ku-band antenna and Ka-band antenna are carried out through the same quad-ridge waveguide aperture and have the same array spacing. Thus, the large element spacing at high-frequency band inevitably leads to high sidelobes. The parasitic elements are adopted to suppress the high sidelobes in the E-plane and H-plane, and the realized gain of the high-frequency antenna is increased accordingly. In addition, a 1/ <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$2\lambda $ </tex-math></inline-formula> short-circuited stub is designed in the QCWL-based feed network for isolation enhancement. To demonstrate, a <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$4\times $ </tex-math></inline-formula> 4 element Ku-/Ka-band multipolarized antenna prototype is fabricated and measured. Experimental results show that the impedance bandwidths of 19.4% (14.4–17.5 GHz) for dual LP and 7.4% (32.5–35 GHz) for dual CP are achieved. The peak gains of the dual LP are 18.4 and 18 dBi, while those of the dual CP are 23.4 and 22.9 dBic.

The dielectric material used as a substrate and the shapes of the patches play an important role in the performance of bandwidth, return loss, and gain of the microstrip patch antenna. This paper presents the relative study of different shapes of microstrip Patch antenna for different dielectric materials. The main application of these antennas is for satellite communication in Ku-Band. The height of the substrate plays an essential role in the enhancement of bandwidth and it is chosen 1.012mm and three substrate materials (RT Duroid (5880), Teflon, and FR4) with different dielectric constants were chosen for the performance comparison. Aperture coupling, which is again one of the promising techniques for bandwidth enhancement, is used as a feeding technique for the designs. Coupling must be taken care of while using aperture coupling, which is done by precisely optimizing the feed line dimensions, feed position, slot dimensions, and patch dimensions. The antenna performance is studied by varying the parameters like patch, feed line, and slot dimensions, the size of the substrate, and the feed line position concerning the slot. Optimization is also performed for the position of the ground layer within the substrate material and the ground plane in the middle position of the substrate is chosen for the final designs. Return loss and impedance matching were analyzed for all designs. The rectangular and circular patches are used for a comparative study, which is conducted from 12GHz to 14GHz out of which the circular patch is found to give better performance. The analysis is carried out for RT Duroid (5880) material and the bandwidth obtained in both cases is almost 3GHz. Similarly, the analysis is carried out for different dielectric materials over the frequencies of 12GHz to 14GHz in which RT Duroid and Teflon give better performance in terms of return loss and FR4 gives better performance in terms of miniaturization. The analysis is carried out for rectangular patches and the bandwidth obtained for FR4 is 1GHz whereas, for RT Duroid (5880) and Teflon, it comes out to be 3GHz. The results are depicted in various tabular and graphical formats. This study is conducted using an HFSS, an electromagnetic solver.

Empirical analysis of microstrip patch antenna for different substrate materials and shapes using aperture coupled technique

This work presents a dual‐band (3.5/26 GHz) shared‐aperture antenna with high aperture reuse ratio and high isolation. The proposed 26‐GHz 4 × 4 substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity‐backed slot array antenna consists of four hybrid TE130–TE310‐mode SIW cavities, which can simplify the design of feeding network. The radiating slots are unequally offset and inductance windows are added for good impedance matching. The entire structure of the 4 × 4 slot array antenna also functions as an equivalent TM10‐mode patch antenna at 3.5 GHz. The resonant frequency of the patch is fine‐tuned by inserting an air gap instead of enlarging the patch length, thus ensuring high aperture reuse ratio. To enhance channel isolation, the patch is designed with a bandpass filtering response centered at 3.5 GHz by introducing a stub‐loaded resonator feeding structure. For demonstration, a prototype of the proposed dual‐band antenna was fabricated and measured. The measured results show that the proposed antenna achieves excellent dual‐band performance, and its aperture reuse ratio and channel isolation are as high as 87.5% and 62 dB, respectively.

Dual‐band shared‐aperture antenna with high aperture reuse ratio and high isolation

A planar structure-shared antenna and antenna array are designed with compact size and high channel isolation. The substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot antenna array (CBSA) is used to replace microstrip patch. And mode TM10 of patch radiator is excited by coaxial probe, which operates at 2.4GHz. High-order resonant mode (TE330) of SIW-CBSA supports 9 radiation slots to achieve high realized gain approximately 12 dBi at 11.5GHz. Meanwhile, the SIW-CBSA is fed by a shielded coaxial probe as well. Thus, the structure-shared configuration features high channel isolation with about 45 dB at the low frequency and 25 dB at the high frequency.

A Dual Band Structure-Shared Microstrip Patch Antenna with SIW Cavity-Backed Slot Array

This paper describes the design of microwave/millimeter wave dual-band patch antenna array with shared aperture. The antenna array is designed of stack structure of three printed circuit boards. The Ka-band patches are fed directly with microstrip lines of the Ka-band power divider network and the E-band patches are coupling fed by the E-band power divider network through slots cut in the antenna ground. An antenna unit is studied, fabricated and measured firstly to verify the feasibility of the shared aperture structure. Finally, a shared aperture antenna array consists of a $2\times 4$ Ka-band array and an $8\times 16$ E-band array is designed based on the antenna unit. The E-band and the Ka-band feeding network are carefully designed to reduce the reflections, and the Ka-band feeding network combines series feed and parallel feed in order to save space. The shared aperture antenna array is fabricated and measured, and the results are presented. In order to measure the E-band array, the main port of the E-band power divider is connected to a standard WR12 waveguide through an antipodal fin-line waveguide to microstrip transition.
