The widespread use of fertilizers is a result of the increased global demand for food. The commonly used chemical fertilizers may increase plant growth and output, but they have deleterious effects on the soil, the environment, and even human health. Therefore, nanofertilizers are one of the most promising solutions or substitutes for conventional fertilizers. These engineered materials are composed of nanoparticles containing macro- and micronutrients that are delivered to the plant rhizosphere in a regulated manner. In nanofertilizers, the essential minerals and nutrients (such as N, P, K, Fe, and Mn) are bonded alone or in combination with nano-dimensional adsorbents. This review discusses the development of nanotechnology-based smart and efficient agriculture using nanofertilizers that have higher nutritional management, owing to their ability to increase the nutrient uptake efficiency. Additionally, the synthesis and mechanism of action of the nanofertilizers are discussed, along with the different types of fertilizers that are currently available. Furthermore, sustainable agriculture can be realised by the targeted delivery and controlled release of nutrients through the application of nanoscale active substances. This paper emphasises the successful development and safe application of nanotechnology in agriculture; however, certain basic concerns and existing gaps in research need to be addressed and resolved.

Global climate change affects weather patterns, affecting soil salinity and drought tolerance. Crop resilience and agriculture sustainability can be enhanced by exploring soil salinity, plant drought tolerance, microbial diversity, and remediation techniques. This review examines the morpho-physiological, molecular, and genetic mechanisms underlying plant adaptation to soil salinity and drought stress. It highlights their impact on plant growth, productivity, and microbial diversity. Diverse methods are investigated to tackle soil salinity and drought stress, encompassing chemical, physical, and biological approaches. Additionally, water-efficient agricultural practices and drought-resistant crop varieties are presented as ways to increase plant tolerance to these stresses. These implications for sustainable agriculture emphasize the potential of these findings to optimize resource utilization, increase crop yield, and promote environmental sustainability. The review concludes by discussing future research directions, particularly the need for more study into the molecular basis of plant-microbe interactions and stress tolerance mechanisms. Soil salinity and drought tolerance: An evaluation of plant growth, productivity, microbial diversity, and amelioration strategies

Extreme environmental conditions, such as abiotic stresses (drought, salinity, heat, chilling and intense light), offer great opportunities to study how different microorganisms and plant nutrition can influence plant growth and development. The intervention of biological agents such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) coupled with proper plant nutrition can improve the agricultural importance of different plant species. Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) belongs to the monophyletic taxon and consists of around 338 genera and 3709 species worldwide. Brassicaceae is composed of several important species of economical, ornamental and food crops (vegetables, cooking oils, forage, condiments and industrial species). Sustainable production of Brassicas plants has been compromised over the years due to several abiotic stresses and the unbalanced utilization of chemical fertilizers and uncertified chemicals that ultimately affect the environment and human health. This chapter summarized the influence of PGPRs and nutrient management in the Brassicaceae family against abiotic stresses. The use of PGPRs contributed to combating climate-induced change/abiotic factors such as drought, soil and water salinization and heavy metal contamination that limits the general performance of plants. Brassica is widely utilized as an oil and vegetable crop and is harshly affected by abiotic stresses. Therefore, the use of PGPRs along with proper mineral nutrients management is a possible strategy to cope with abiotic stresses by improving biochemical, physiological and growth attributes and the production of brassica in an eco-friendly environment.

Regulatory Mechanisms of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria and Plant Nutrition against Abiotic Stresses in Brassicaceae Family

Mungbean [Vigna radiata L. (Wilczek)] is considered as an extremely nutritious crop possessing a high level of micronutrients, but their low bioavailability in the crop leads to micronutrient malnutrition in humans. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the potential of nutrients viz. boron (B), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) biofortification on productivity, nutrient concentration and uptake as well as the economics of mungbean cultivation. In the experiment, the various combinations of RDF with ZnSO4.7H2O (0.5%), FeSO4.7H2O (0.5%) and borax (0.1%) were applied to mungbean variety ML 2056. The combined foliar application of Zn, Fe and B was highly efficient in increasing the yield of grain as well as straw in mungbean exhibiting maximum values i.e. 944 kg ha-1 and 6133 kg ha-1, respectively. Similar results for B, Zn and Fe concentration in grain (27.3 mg kg-1, 35.7 mg kg-1 and 187.1 mg kg-1, respectively) and straw (21.1 mg kg-1, 18.6 mg kg-1 and 376.1 mg kg-1, respectively) of mungbean were observed. Also, uptake of Zn and Fe by grain (31.3 g ha-1 and 164.4 g ha-1, respectively), as well as straw (113.7 g ha-1 and 2295.0 g ha-1, respectively), was maximum for the above treatment. Whereas, the B uptake was found to enhance significantly through the combined application of B, Zn and Fe, where the values 24.0 g ha-1 and 128.7 g ha-1 corresponded to grain and straw, respectively. Thus, combined use of ZnSO4.7H2O (0.5%) + FeSO4.7H2O (0.5%) and borax (0.1%) significantly improved the yield outcomes, the concentration of B, Zn and Fe, uptake and economic returns of mungbean cultivation to alleviate the B, Zn and Fe deficiency.

Due to increasing incidences of abiotic stresses all over the world, the foremost objective to achieve crop security and nutritional quality for the global population is indeed a daunting task. Plants under abiotic stress conditions, such as drought, salt stress, heat stress, nutrient stress, etc. compete for nutrients, therefore exaggerate the deleterious effects of nutrients deficiency. Globally, 5–35 percent of soils are deficient in different micronutrients, which further contribute toward nutrient deficiency in plants, human beings and animals. Optimization of micronutrient status in soil and plant system along with macronutrients, secondary nutrients and heavy metals have been evidenced to improve the resilience of the crops under such conditions, as these serve as key structural elements in numerous enzymes and co-enzymes. Additionally, these nutrients facilitate the stabilization of protein structures and suppress the production of reactive oxygen species. The absorption and accumulation of micronutrients in plants involve various mechanisms such as conversion to more soluble ionic forms followed by transportation through specific/non-specific transporters. The versatility of micronutrients application under severe environmental conditions has been evidenced through significant improvement in yield and quality traits of various crops. Lately, the uses of nano-micronutrients in agriculture have been exploited due to their distinct properties than their bulk counterparts. The uptake of nanoparticles involves either direct uptake followed by transportation through a particle delivery system or through encapsulation designed for timely release of nutrients. Abiotic stresses alter various metabolic processes in the plant system and thus pose the threat to the growth and yield parameters of plants. The development of various sensor-based techniques such as near Infrared reflectance spectroscopy for early detection and monitoring of abiotic stresses is essential for real-time crop management decisions. Further, the knowledge of nutrient interactions might be an effective strategy for nutrient management and biofortification of plants with particular nutrients. Thus, the present review highlights the mechanisms of micronutrients availability and absorption behavior with aid of different advanced technologies in the mitigation of different abiotic stresses and consequently improvement in crop productivity and nutritional quality, especially in climate-vulnerable countries. 

Impact of micronutrients in mitigation of abiotic stresses in soils and plants—A progressive step toward crop security and nutritional quality

The nutritional value of Glycine max L. (soybean) and its yield potential for improving sustainability of agricultural systems has resulted into its increased production. Soybean crop has potential to replace the rice crop in the rice-wheat cropping system. However, the crop has shown high sensitivity towards iron (Fe) deficiency, and thus recorded major yield and nutritional quality losses. Thus, a three-year field experiment was planned to compare the impact of the application rate (0.5% and 1.0%) and number of sprays of FeSO4 on yield, Fe nutrition, and economic outcomes of soybeans. The Fe application posed a beneficial impact on the studied parameters due to an increase in enzymatic activity of Fe-containing enzymes. Among various treatments, maximum increase in grain and straw yield (3064 and 9341 kg ha−1, respectively) was obtained with 0.5% FeSO4 application at 30, 60, and 90 DAS over the control (2397 and 6894 kg ha−1, respectively). Similar results were attained for grain Fe concentration (69.9 mg kg−1) and Fe uptake in grain and straw (214 and 9088 g ha−1, respectively). The results were statistically non-significant, with the treatment in which 0.5% FeSO4 was applied at 30 and 60 DAS. The economic returns of soybean cultivation were also highest with 0.5% FeSO4 application at 30, 60, and 90 DAS with highest benefit; the cost (3.02) followed by treatment in which 0.5% FeSO4 was applied at 30 and 60 DAS. Thus, 0.5% FeSO4 application at 30, 60, and 90 DAS can be recommended for soybeans grown on sandy loam soil followed by 0.5% FeSO4 application at 30and 60 DAS to harness maximum yield, Fe concentration, and profitability.
