Introduction to the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (Fdtd) Method for Electromagnetics

In this work, we propose a numerical method to obtain an unconditionally stable solution for the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for the TE/sub z/ case. This new method does not utilize the customary explicit leapfrog time scheme of the conventional FDTD method. Instead we solve the time-domain Maxwell's equations by expressing the transient behaviors in terms of weighted Laguerre polynomials. By using these orthonormal basis functions for the temporal variation, the time derivatives can be handled analytically, which results in an implicit relation. In this way, the time variable is eliminated from the computations. By introducing the Galerkin temporal testing procedure, the marching-on in time method is replaced by a recursive relation between the different orders of the weighted Laguerre polynomials if the input waveform is of arbitrary shape. Since the weighted Laguerre polynomials converge to zero as time progresses, the electric and magnetic fields when expanded in a series of weighted Laguerre polynomials also converge to zero. The other novelty of this approach is that, through the use of the entire domain-weighted Laguerre polynomials for the expansion of the temporal variation of the fields, the spatial and the temporal variables can be separated.

An unconditionally stable scheme for the finite-difference time-domain method

The Crank-Nicolson method is an unconditionally stable, implicit numerical scheme with second-order accuracy in both time and space. When applied to solve Maxwell's equations in two-dimensions, the resulting matrix is block tri-diagonal, which is very expensive to solve. The Douglas-Gunn algorithm is used to subdivide the update procedure into two sub-steps. At each sub-step only a tri-diagonal matrix needs to be solved for one field component. The other two field components are updated explicitly in one step. The numerical dispersion relations are given for the original Crank-Nicolson scheme and for the Douglas-Gunn modification. The predicted numerical dispersion is shown to agree with numerical experiments, and its numerical anisotropy is shown to be much smaller than that of the ADI-FDTD.

Unconditionally stable Crank-Nicolson scheme for solving two-dimensional Maxwell's equations

In this paper, an unconditionally stable three-dimensional (3-D) finite-difference time-method (FDTD) is presented where the time step used is no longer restricted by stability but by accuracy. The principle of the alternating direction implicit (ADI) technique that has been used in formulating an unconditionally stable two-dimensional FDTD is applied. Unlike the conventional ADI algorithms, however, the alternation is performed in respect to mixed coordinates rather than to each respective coordinate direction, Consequently, only two alternations in solution marching are required in the 3-D formulations. Theoretical proof of the unconditional stability is shown and numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the method. It is found that the number of iterations with the proposed FDTD can be at least four times less than that with the conventional FDTD at the same level of accuracy.
