Damage analysis of shear mechanical behavior of pile–structural soil interface considering shear rate effect

In this study, a deep foundation pit project of Nanlishi Road in the Xicheng District of Beijing was taken as the engineering background. Based on the monitoring method of that project and referring to its design scheme principle, this study applied advanced monitoring technology methods such as anchor axial force and deep horizontal displacement monitoring. The mechanism of pile–soil interaction, the stress change and deformation law of the three-pile and two-anchor support systems of deep foundation pits, and the stability of deep foundation pit support in an anhydrous sandy pebble stratum, were studied in depth. Results show: The axial force of the anchor rod had great loss in the early stage of prestressed tension locking; with the deepening of foundation pit excavation, the lateral pressure of stratum increased gradually, and the prestress of the anchor increased until the end of excavation, where it tended to be stable; the maximum horizontal displacement of the pile was smaller than the design value, and the maximum horizontal displacement was not at the top of the pile; the axial force of the prestressed anchor varied with the formation pressure and surrounding load; the tension of the lower anchor had a certain influence on the axial force of the upper anchor. Except for the east side of the foundation pit, the anchors of the first layer were all stabilized at about 140 kN, and the anchors of the second layer were stabilized at about 150 kN. The third row of anchors on the north side was stable at around 170 kN. By analyzing the variation law of stress and deformation of the supporting structure of the foundation pit, the timeliness of the data during the construction process was improved, and a reference is provided for the informatization construction of related working conditions.

Study on Design and Deformation Law of Pile-Anchor Support System in Deep Foundation Pit

Suspended submarine cables are prone to likely mechanical damages due to ship anchors, which represent a significant threat to the reliability of power transmission and information communication networks. This paper is aimed at presenting a detailed investigation to the dynamic response of a ship anchor impacting the suspended section a submarine cable in order to reduce the risk of cable damage. In this regard, a three-dimensional and dual nonlinear model of the anchor affecting a subsea cable is established using ABAQUS finite element analysis software. The damage effect due to the ship anchor on the suspended and buried-in-soil sections of the cable is studied. Results show that when a ship anchor hits a suspended section of the subsea cable, the mechanical stress is concentrated at the impacted point and is progressing to both sides of the suspended section with a significant cable deformation. On the other hand, the buried section of the cable suffers from a short impact process, and the deformation is relatively small. To reduce this impact effectively, a detailed technical comparison of two common dumping and filling methods is conducted, and the better protection method is proposed.

Force system conversion mechanisms of retaining structures for subway excavation in soft soil

Grouting materials play a very important role in the performance of anchor structures. In this study, a new grouting material (FCSA-1) consisting of ferrite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate cement (FCSA) clinker, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), limestone, and anhydrite was prepared. The objective of this study is to examine how the hydration process of the novel grouting material affects its physical and mechanical properties through laboratory tests. This investigation will particularly focus on parameters such as setting time, fluidity, hydration product formation, microstructure, expansion rate, and strength development within a 28-day timeframe. Additionally, 2D numerical simulations of pull-out tests and field pull-out tests were conducted to validate the anchorage performance of FCSA-1. The laboratory tests results showed that the initial setting time was 25 min and final setting time was 40 min. Additionally, the fluidity of the new grouting material measured at 282 mm. The free expansion rate exhibited a non-linear growth trend, with an average growth rate of 4.51‰/d within 14 days. The expansion was attributed to the increased presence of the expansive product ettringite during the early stages, while the expansion was mainly due to the volume growth of ettringite during the later stages. The uniaxial compressive strength reached 40.35 MPa within 1 day and increased to 61.75 MPa within 7 days, remaining stable thereafter. The primary hydration products of the FCSA-1 identified in the quaternary blend were ettringite and hydroxide aluminum (AH3), with a stable phase content after 1 day of curing, indicating rapid hydration reaction. Due to the rapid increase in hydration products and crystal volume growth, the pore structure of the FCSA-1 became more compact. In addition, numerical simulation results showed that using FCSA-1 as a grouting material improved the anchorage performance of the structure compared to OPC. This indicated that the early high-strength properties of the grouting material improve its anchorage performance significantly. Field pull-out tests showed that the combination of resin and FCSA-1 grouting material increased pull-out force by 34.21% compared with that of using resin alone. According to the results, the novel grouting material exhibits early high-strength and slight expansion performance during the early stages of hydration, making it a suitable grouting material for engineering applications. 

Study on early hydration and mechanical properties of ferrite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate cement-based grouting materials

Foundation pit engineering has been developing rapidly with the challenges associated with modern urbanization. As a result, deep excavations can now be performed at the heart of coastal metropolises with dense existing structures and adverse soil and hydraulic conditions. On the other hand, foundation engineering is challenged with sustainability and economic viability such that cost-effectiveness is a key factor provided that the robustness and safety requirements are fully satisfied. This paper presents the design of the retaining system for a deep foundation excavation that is located in a second-tier inland city with less crowed existing structures and good soil and hydraulic conditions. This is representative of the current trend of the suburban development of major cities and the development of below first-tier cities, as a response to the saturating of the major cities. Different designs are reviewed for this case in order to strike the balance between structural capability and cost-effectiveness. The analysis indicates that a hybrid solution is particularly suitable for such type of construction. Specifically, results show that the maximum displacement, bending moment, and shear force in the pit can be reduced by over 50%, 40%, and 30%, respectively, by the combination of soil nailing wall and pile anchor compared with a single support solution. And for the combination of non-prestressed anchor bolts and prestressed anchor cables can effectively save the cost while improving the safety factor of foundation pit during excavation. The findings are instructive to similar projects with cost-effectiveness as a major factor.
