Ionic Conductive Organohydrogels with Dynamic Pattern Behavior and Multi‐Environmental Stability

A liquid marble (LM) describes a liquid droplet that is wrapped by nonwetting micro- or nanoparticles and therefore obtains characteristics of a solid powder particle. Here, we investigate the effect of the stabilizing particle size on the resulting structure and properties of the LM. We synthesize a series of polystyrene particles with ultrathin coatings of heptadecafluorooctanesulfonic acid-doped polypyrrole with diameters ranging between 1 and 1000 μm by an aqueous chemical oxidative seeded polymerization of pyrrole. The methodology produced a set of hydrophobic particles with similar surface characteristics to allow the formation of LMs and to probe size effects in the LM formation and stabilization efficiency. We found that particles with a size above 20 μm adsorb as a particle monolayer to the surface of the LM, while smaller particles are adsorbed as ill-defined, multilayered aggregates. These results indicate that the balance between particle-particle interaction and gravity is an important parameter to control the surface structure of the LMs. The assembly behavior and size of the particles also correlated with the mechanical integrity of the LM against fall impact. The mechanical resistance was affected by the gap distance between the inner liquid of the LM and supporting substrate, the capillary forces acting between the particles at the LM surface, and the potential energy that depended on the particle size. Last, we demonstrate that the broadband light-absorbing properties of the polypyrrole shell also allow manipulating the evaporation rate of the inner liquid.

Effect of Stabilizing Particle Size on the Structure and Properties of Liquid Marbles.

With an ideal comfort level, sensitivity, reliability, and user-friendliness, wearable sensors are making great contributions to daily health care, nursing care, early disease discovery, and body monitoring. Some wearable sensors are imparted with hierarchical and uneven microstructures, such as microneedle structures, which not only facilitate the access to multiple bio-analysts in the human body but also improve the abilities to detect feeble body signals. In this paper, we present the promising applications and latest progress of functional microneedles in wearable sensors. We begin by discussing the roles of microneedles as sensing units, including how the signals are captured, converted, and transmitted. We also introduce the microneedle-like structures as power units, which depend on triboelectric or piezoelectric effects, etc. Finally, we summarize the cutting-edge applications of microneedle-based wearable sensors in biophysical signal monitoring and biochemical analyte detection, and provide critical thinking on their future perspectives.

Functional microneedles for wearable electronics

Sulfur-stabilized liquid marbles were readily prepared by rolling water droplets on a sulfur (S8) powder bed. Because of the construction of a gel layer on the surface of liquid marbles, the resulting liquid marbles have shape-designable characteristics. The effects of rolling time and volume of droplets on the deformability of sulfur-stabilized liquid marbles were investigated along with their mechanical stability and lifetime. The capability of sulfur-stabilized liquid marbles to be deformed at different pH values enables these liquid marbles to act as microreservoirs with desired shapes for aqueous solutions. Immersing the sulfur-stabilized liquid marbles into organic liquids leads to an increase in the liquid marbles' lifetime, and thereby they can survive at the interface of aqueous-organic two-phased systems for a long time. Finally, the applications of sulfur-stabilized liquid marbles as photocatalytic microreactors, electrochemical microcells, and monodisperse Pickering-like emulsions were demonstrated.

Effects of particle size on the electrocoalescence dynamics and arrested morphology of liquid marbles

The emerging human–machine interfacing applications have driven the developments of soft electronic devices that can seamlessly bridge electronics and tissues. Despite impressive progress, mismatches between current bioelectronic devices and biological tissues in both mechanical properties and charge transportation still exist, which could cause severe pain and damage to tissues. Herein, we present an ultra-stretchable all-hydrogel device with custom-designed microchannel patterns perfused with ionic liquids. Hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) are sufficiently conductive and remain stably separated from aqueous surroundings both in air and underwater, representing a perfect soft conductor for stretchable electronics. The potential of such designer IL-perfused all-hydrogel devices is demonstrated as soft conductors for triggering light-emitting diodes and as soft sensors for skin-conformed sensing under large stretches. We envision that such soft ionic devices may be useful for stimulating neurons and muscles in vivo with reduced immune responses.

An improved understanding of the rupture dynamics for liquid marbles is essential for their application in sensors, miniaturized reactions, biomedical scaffolds, the synthesis of functional materials, and others. This work suggests that a compressed liquid marble always ruptures at the edge of the contact area between the marble and a substrate. The rupture dynamics of a compressed marble is visualized with a particle-level resolution using a marble coated with monodispersed microparticles. High-speed photography indicates that the particle density decreases significantly from the center to the edge, and the sparse particle layer at the edge initiates rupturing. Such a particle density distribution is well depicted with our proposed model, which predicts the theoretical values that agree well with the experimental results.
