Optical-intensity modulators with PbTe thermoelectric nanopowders for ultrafast photonics

Label-free trace detection of bio-molecules by liquid-interface assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering using a microfluidic chip

Abstract It is always a great challenge to bridge the nano- and macro-worlds in nanoscience, for instance, manufacturing uniform nanogratings on a whole wafer in seconds instead of hours even days. Here, we demonstrate a single-step while extremely high-throughput femtosecond laser scanning technique to obtain wafer-scale, highly regular nanogratings on semiconductor-on-metal thin films. Our technique takes advantage of long-range surface plasmons-laser interference, which is regulated by a self-initiated seed. By controlling the scanning speed, two types of nanogratings are readily manufactured, which are produced by either oxidation or ablation. We achieve a record manufacturing speed (&gt;1 cm 2 s −1 ), with tunable periodicity of Λ &lt; 1 µm. The fractional variation of their periodicity is evaluated to be as low as ∆ Λ/Λ ≈ 0.5%. Furthermore, by utilizing the semiconductor-on-metal film-endowed interference effects, an extremely high energy efficiency is achieved via suppressing light reflection during femtosecond laser nano-processing. As the fabricated nanogratings exhibit multi-functionality, we exemplify their practical applications in highly sensitive refractive index sensing, vivid structural colors, and durable superhydrophilicity.

Surface plasmons interference nanogratings: wafer-scale laser direct structuring in seconds

The detection of molecules from highly diluted solutions with a limited amount is vital for precancer diagnosis, food safety, and forensic analysis. The sensitivity and convenience of detection techniques are the primary concerns. In this study, a hybrid superhydrophobic/-philic (SH/SHL) microporous platform is designed and fabricated by a femtosecond laser to improve surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performances. Relying on the micropores fabricated at the center of SHL patterns, sediments distributed at the central regions are avoided, leading to the further enrichment of the target molecules. The engineered micropores with high identification further improve the speed of Raman tests, and the fabricated SERS substrate shows an advantage in outdoor handheld detection and automated inspection applications. The optimized SERS sensor is sufficient for attomolar-level detection (10-17 M) of rhodamine 6G using analyte volumes of just 5 μL, corresponding to an enhancement factor of 5.19 × 1013. Meanwhile, a relative standard deviation of 7.48% at 10-10 M shows the excellent uniformity of this proposed SERS platform. This work further pushes forward the practical applications of SERS technology in ultratrace molecular detections.

Extremely Sensitive SERS Sensors Based on a Femtosecond Laser-Fabricated Superhydrophobic/-philic Microporous Platform.

As a noncontact strategy with flexible tools and high efficiency, laser precision engineering is a significant advanced processing way for high-quality micro-/nanostructure fabrication, especially to achieve novel functional photoelectric structures and devices. For the microscale creation, several femtosecond laser fabrication methods, including multiphoton absorption, laser-induced plasma-assisted ablation, and incubation effect have been developed. Meanwhile, the femtosecond laser can be combined with microlens arrays and interference lithography techniques to achieve the structures in submicron scales. Down to nanoscale feature sizes, advanced processing strategies, such as near-field scanning optical microscope, atomic force microscope, and microsphere, are applied in femtosecond laser processing and the minimum nanostructure creation has been pushed down to ~25 nm due to near-field effect. The most fascinating femtosecond laser precision engineering is the possibility of large-area, high-throughput, and far-field nanofabrication. In combination with special strategies, including dual femtosecond laser beam irradiation, ~15 nm nanostructuring can be achieved directly on silicon surfaces in far field and in ambient air. The challenges and perspectives in the femtosecond laser precision engineering are also discussed.
