Green and efficient epoxidation of propylene with hydrogen peroxide (HPPO process) catalyzed by hollow TS-1 zeolite: A 1.0 kt/a pilot-scale study

Adipic acid is one of the most important feedstocks for producing resins, nylons, lubricants, plasticizers. Current industrial petrochemical process, producing adipic acid from KA oil, catalyzed by nitric acid, has a serious pollution to the environment, due to the formation of waste nitrous oxide. Hence, developing cleaner methods to produce adipic acid has attracted much attention of both industry and academia. This mini-review article discussed advances on adipic acid synthesis from bio-renewable feedstocks, as well as most recent progress on cleaner technology from fossil fuels over novel catalytic materials. Synthetic routes for bio-derived adipic acid will be critically revised, while novel catalytic materials with high atomic efficiency for fossil-derived adipic acid will be discussed and compared. This work on recent advances in green adipic acid production will provide insights and guidance to further study of various other industrial processes for producing nylon precursors.

Recent Progress in Adipic Acid Synthesis Over Heterogeneous Catalysts

In order to improve the catalytic performance in the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone by molecular oxygen, ordered mesoporous Sn–TiO2 catalysts with high Lewis acidity were successfully designed and synthesized via a facile one-pot evaporation induced self-assembly method. Their physical and chemical properties were characterized by different techniques including XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, UV–Vis spectra, ICP, Py-IR, SEM and TEM. The XRD, TEM and N2 adsorption–desorption results showed that the ordered mesoporous structure can be preserved after tin incorporation. The UV–Vis, SEM and Py-IR results indicated that tin species can be homogeneously tetrahedrally incorporated in the crystalline framework of mesoporous anatase TiO2 and create the Lewis acidity. The ordered mesoporous 15Sn–TiO2 catalyst showed highest catalytic performance where cyclohexanone conversion of 91.4 % and e-caprolactone selectivity of 93.2 %. Moreover, catalytic recycling tests demonstrated that the Sn–TiO2 catalysts exhibited high potential reusability.
