Efficient removal of neodymium from aqueous solution by amino-functionalized SBA-15

It is of great significance to develop a kind of adsorbent which can adsorb and in-situ immobilize radionuclides from aqueous solution. Herein, new amino-functionalized mesoporous zirconia-silica (ZNSi) composites were prepared and applied to adsorb and in-situ immobilize the simulated trivalent actinides (Nd) from aqueous solution. The obtained ZNSi composites exhibited high Nd adsorption capacity (31.14 mg/g) owing to the formation of Nd(OH)3 via the reaction between Nd3+ and OH− derived from the protonation of amino groups. The spent adsorbents with adsorbed Nd3+ were successfully changed to stable ZrSiO4-based glass ceramics by simple sintering treatment. The ZrO2 and Nd contents had great effect on the phase composition, microstructure evolution and aqueous stability of the obtained ZrSiO4-based glass ceramics waste forms. The immobilized Nd showed excellent aqueous stability (10−7 g m−2 d−1) due to the crystal lattice immobilization of ZrSiO4. Owing to the efficient adsorption and in-situ immobilization ability, the obtained ZNSi could be potential materials for radioactive wastewater treatment. 

Efficient adsorption and in-situ ceramics immobilization of simulated trivalent actinides (Nd) by amino-functionalized mesoporous zirconia-silica

The development of matrix with high capacity and stability immobilization of nuclear waste is highly desirable. Herein, new type of zircon-based borosilicate glass-ceramics (ZBGC) with high immobilization capacity and excellent aqueous stability was prepared and applied to immobilize simulated trivalent actinide (Nd). The effects of Nd doping and sintering temperature on the microstructure and phase composition of the obtained ZBGC were researched. The experimental suggested that high ZrSiO4 formation rate (97.49 wt%) was obtained by tuning the Nd content and sintering temperature. The record high immobilization capacity of Nd in ZGBC (18 at%) was achieved owing to the synergistic effect between the crystal lattice and glass network immobilization. Additionally, the obtained Nd-doped ZBGC exhibited excellent aqueous stability (∼10−6 g m−2 d−1) due to the high compactness. The results demonstrated that ZBGC with high immobilization capacity and aqueous stability could be potential matrix for actinides immobilization. 

High capacity and aqueous stability immobilization of simulated trivalent actinides by zircon-based borosilicate glass-ceramics: Synergistic effect between the crystal lattice and glass network immobilization

Abstract Multiphase ceramics have a high application potential in the field of nuclear waste immobilization because of the efficient synergy between the individual phases. In this work, zirconia/garnet multiphase ceramics with high efficient and effective immobilization capacity of trivalent actinides were successfully prepared using conventional solid‐phase sintering. ZrO 2 doping increases the lattice site available for nuclide substitution and advance the immobilization capacity of the ceramic substrate for nuclide. At the same time, the phase change of zirconia is used to tougher and improve the physical properties of the ceramic waste form. The feasibility of using multiphase ceramics for the efficient immobilization of trivalent actinides was assessed by studying the phase evolution, microstructure, Vickers hardness, and chemical stability of the multi‐phase ceramics. Zr 1‐ x Nd x O 2‐ x /2 /Ca 3‐ y Nd y Zr 3‐ y Fe y ‐1 Fe 3 O 12 multiphase ceramics exhibited superior physical or chemical properties compared to most of the multiphase ceramics as well as the previously prepared single‐phase calcium garnet ceramic waste forms. The Vickers hardness of all the multiphase ceramic samples ranged between 685 and 730 HV0.5. Under the condition of using simulate Bei Shan groundwater as leaching agent, the normalized leaching rates of Nd is approximately 10 − 6 g · m −2 · day −1 , showing good chemical stability and achieving efficient and effective immobilization of trivalent actinides. The excellent chemical, as well as physical properties of Zr 1‐ x Nd x O 2‐ x /2 /Ca 3‐ y Nd y Zr 3‐ y Fe y ‐1 Fe 3 O 12 multiphase ceramics are expected to make them one of the substrates for more efficient and effective immobilizing of trivalent actinides. 

Zirconia/garnet multiphase ceramics with high immobilization capacity for Nd confers better physical and chemical stability

A kind of Sr0.5Zr2(PO4)3-Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 (hereinafter SrZP-Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4) composite ceramics was prepared through a one-step microwave sintering technique, where Sr, Nd, Sm were simulated for fission products and minor actinides (MA). The crystal structure and morphology of constituent phases were systematically characterized by XRD, TEM, and SEM techniques. The temperature dependent phase analysis results of SrZP-Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 composite ceramics illustrate that with evaluating temperature monazite structure formed primarily, and the SrZP phase formed subsequently. With the temperature rising further, the monazite phase finally transformed into Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 monazite solid solution. XRD refinement and TEM measurements are used to verify the crystal structures of the as-prepared SrZP and Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 phases in the composite ceramics. The dependence of densification behaviors on temperature shows that the distinct densification of the SrZP-Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 composite ceramics occurs in the temperature range of 950 °C to 1000 °C, and the relative density reaches 97.7 % at 1050 °C. TG-DSC tests show that the SrZP-Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 composite ceramics exhibit excellent thermal stability at high temperatures. And SrZP-Nd0.5Sm0.5PO4 composite ceramics possess outstanding chemical stability, whose normalized leaching rate of Sr, Nd, and Sm is 10−4 g·m−2·d−1, 10−7 g·m−2·d−1, and 10−7 g·m−2·d−1 order of magnitude, respectively.
