Stereolithography additive manufacturing (SL-AM) has been reported to produce SiC ceramic recently. However, both the density and strength of the stereolithography additive manufactured SiC ceramic need to be improved. In this study, different sintering approaches, including liquid phase sintering (LPS), precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP), and liquid silicon infiltration (LSI), were applied based on the SL-AM prepared SiC green bodies. SiC sintered bodies were finally obtained. In each condition, the relative density, crystalline phases, microstructure, and flexural strength were investigated in detail. The relative density of the LPS-sintered SiC, PIP-sintered SiC, and LSI-sintered SiC ceramics were 78.2 ​± ​1.36%, 82.6 ​± ​0.48%, and 96.2 ​± ​0.32%, respectively. And the strength of the LPS-sintered SiC, PIP-sintered SiC, and LSI-sintered SiC body were 77 ​± ​5.2 ​MPa, 184.2 ​± ​8.5 ​MPa, and 210.4 ​± ​10.3 ​MPa, respectively. The density and strength were compared to each other, as well as other additive manufacturing results and traditional results. At last, LSI is found to be the most promising sintering approach for stereolithography additive manufactured SiC ceramic.

Abstract Nanocarbon materials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, etc.) are considered the ideal toughening phase of ceramic matrix composites because of their unique structures and excellent properties. The strengthening and toughening effect of nanocarbon is attributed to several factors, such as their dispersibility in the matrix, interfacial bonding state with the matrix, and structural alteration. In this paper, the development state of nanocarbon-toughened ceramic matrix composites is reviewed based on the preparation methods and basic properties of nanocarbon-reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The assessment is implemented in terms of the influence of the interface bonding condition on the basic properties of ceramic matrix composites and the methods used to improve the interface bonding. Furthermore, the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of nanocarbon-toughened ceramic matrix composites are considered. Moreover, the key problems and perspectives of research work relating to nanocarbon-toughened ceramic matrix composites are highlighted.

Effects of sintering parameters on microstructure, graphene structure stability and mechanical properties of graphene reinforced Al2O3-based composite ceramic tool material

The grain growth kinetics and grain refinement mechanism of Al2O3 grains and WC grains in Al2O3/WC/TiC/graphene ceramic composite were investigated in this work. The grain growth exponent of Al2O3 was determined as 2, which conformed to the growth mechanism of grain boundary diffusion. Meanwhile, the grain growth exponent of WC was determined as 3, which conformed to the grain growth mechanism of volume diffusion or liquid-phase diffusion. The different wettability of graphene to Al2O3 and WC was responsible for their different grain growth mechanisms. By analyzing grain growth activation energy, it can be concluded that the grain growth of Al2O3 and WC went through three stages: (1) softening stage, (2) rapid growth stage and (3) stable stage. The grain refinement mechanism of Al2O3 grains was graphene pinning effect and intragranular structure, and the grain refinement of WC grains could be attributed to the strong bonding interface between WC and graphene.

SiBCN ceramic aerogel/graphene composites prepared via sol-gel infiltration process and polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) route

In this paper, the silicon carbide-reduced graphene oxide (SiC/rGO) composites with different content of rGO are investigated. The hot pressing (HP) at 2100 °C for 60 min under a uniaxial pressure of 40 M Pa resulted in a near fully-dense SiC/rGO composite. In addition, the influence of graphene reinforcement on the sintering process, microstructure, and mechanical properties (fracture toughness, bending strength, and Vickers hardness) of SiC/rGO composites is discussed. The fracture toughness of SiC/rGO composites (7.9MPam1/2) was strongly enhanced by incorporating rGO into the SiC matrix, which was 97% higher than the solid-state sintering SiC ceramics (SSiC) by HP. Meanwhile, the bending strength of the composites reached 625 M Pa, which was 17.3% higher than the reference materials (SSiC). The microstructure of the composites revealed that SiC grains were isolated by rGO platelets, which lead to the toughening of the composite through rGO pull out/debonding and crack bridging mechanisms.
