It is intended to provide a novel remedy or a preventive for arthritis such as arthritis deformans. More specifically speaking, a remedy or a preventive for arthritis such as arthritis deformans or a joint cartilage cell growth promoter characterized by containing, as the active ingredient, a guanyl cyclase B (GC-B) activator; a method of inhibiting arthritis or a method of promoting the growth of joint cartilage cells by activating GC-B; or a method of screening a joint cartilage cell growth promoter or a remedy for arthritis by using GC-B activity as an indication.

This invention provides a composition for increasing a body height of a patient with short stature or an individual other than patients with short stature. More specifically, the invention provides: a composition for increasing the body height of an individual comprising a guanyl cyclase B (GC-B) activator as an active ingredient, the composition being to be administered to an individual free from FGFR3 abnormality; a method for increasing the body height of an individual free from FGFR3 abnormality which comprises activating GC-B; a method for screening an agent for increasing the body height of an individual which comprises selecting an agent for increasing the body height using GC-B activity as an indication; and a method for extending a cartilage bone free from FGFR3 abnormality which comprises activating GC-B in an individual.

The present invention aims to provide novel therapeutic agents for achondroplasia caused by mutations in FGFR3. PURPOSE:To obtain the subject new gene coding the C-terminal amidating enzymes derived from Xenopus laevis, capable of manifesting in eukaryote an enzyme efficiently giving C-terminal alpha-carboxyl-amidated physiologically active substances. CONSTITUTION:The whole RNA is extracted from the skin of Xenopus laevis by conventional technique, and, from the whole RNA, mRNA is separated. using an oligo(dT)cellulose column; cDNA is then made using the mRNA as template, this cDNA is then transfected into Escherichia coli to obtain the cDNA library. Subsequently, this library is screened using, as probe, an oligonucleotide coding the partial amino acid sequence of a C-terminal alpha- amidating enzyme to select a positive clone, the DNA therein is then recovered and treated with a restriction enzyme, thus obtaining the aimed new gene containing an amino acid sequence of the formula, etc., and coding the C- terminal alpha-carboxyl-amidating enzyme for polypeptides or proteins.
