Resonance conditions for a substrate-superstrate printed antenna geometry which allow for large antenna gain are presented. Asymptotic formulas for gain, beamwidth, and bandwidth are given, and the bandwidth limitation of the method is discussed. The method is extended to produce narrow patterns about the horizon, and directive patterns at two different angles.

Gain enhancement methods for printed circuit antennas

In this paper, a compact size dual-polarized high-gain resonant cavity antenna (RCA) at 28 GHz is presented The RCA consists of two layers of substrates The upper layer is composed of a square patch-type frequency selective surface (FSS), a dual-polarized microstrip patch antenna fed by two coaxial SMA connectors is placed onto the lower substrate as the feeding system The electromagnetic waves can be reflected inside the cavity continuously by adjusting the height of cavity The gains of the microstrip patch antenna in orthogonal polarizations can be enhanced though the introduction of FSS as a partially reflective surface The antenna has a compact size of 30 mm × 30 mm, however, the gains of two linear polarizations at 28 GHz can reach 173 dBi and 172 dBi, respectively The −10 dB impedance bandwidth of both the two ports can reach 13 GHz from 273 GHz to 286 GHz

A comparative analysis of two phase correcting structures (PCSs) is presented for an electromagnetic-bandgap resonator antenna (ERA). PCSs are made out of two distinct high and low permittivity materials i.e. Rogers O3010 and polylactic acid (PLA), respectively. Design and performance analysis is based on superstrate height profile, side-lobe levels, antenna directivity, aperture efficiency, prototyping technique and cost. Insertion loss for both superstrates is greater than 0.1 dB, assuring the maximum transmission of the antenna’s radiations through the PCSs. The presented study is based on full wave analysis used to integrate sections of superstrate with custom phase-delays, to attain nearly uniform phase at the output, resulting in improved radiation performance of antenna. The peak directivity of the ERA loaded with Rogers O3010 PCS has increased by 7.3 dB, which is 1.2 dB higher than that of PLA PCS. In addition, the height of the PCS made of Rogers is 71.3% smaller than the PLA PCS. However, the former will involve fabrication complexities related to machining compared to the latter which can be additively manufactured in single step.

Fabry-Perot Resonator (FPR) antennas have attracted significant attention in microwave and millimeter waves due to its properties, such as low complexity, high aperture efficiency and conformal deployment capability. In this paper, a summary of recent researchs on FPR antenna is presented focusing on the different capabilities, technologies and architectures that have been proposed.
